Dunking WBS?? Possible?
    #2316995 - 02/09/04 07:37 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I have some like 4 month old wbs spawn, its only like 2 quarts, i've been sleeping for months and i wanna try and turn out a few bites to eat from this spawn, i plan to dunk it for 18 hours, than i want to just case it. i have never fruited straight wild bird seed, can it be done?

str8 grains fruit just fine especially when cased. altho, grains are best used as spawn for a bluk substrate imo.

ime dunking is unnecessary for grains. maybe yours are especially dry? 18 hours may be overboard as grains tend to fall apart.

question: are you planning to fruit from the jar or bins? in either situation casing is a really good idea but fruiting from a regular mouth jar is a PITA imo. your better off tranferring to a small bin with larger surface area altho you'll wanna allow a regrowth/healing period before initiating fruiting.

ya you can dunk as long as it a hard cake and the mycilium will suck up water. You can allways do a under caseing wich adds alot of water and I think this is your best bet and also do a regular casing or spawn

i got spawn shit goin, i just wanted to use this straight so i don't have to wait for the spawn to colonize the bulk substrate, under casing sounds like a good idea for this, yes my grains are especially dry, like 4 months past 100% colonization dry.

at 4mo past full colonisation you'd be well advised to not try to spawn into bulk. the mycelium's forward momentum has most likely ceased completely.

casing is certainly a good idea.

i have had way over incubated jars that refused to fruit (good luck getting that brick outta the jar) but dumping/casing them outside (assuming favorable weather) seems to be most effective. (keep an eye out for my upcoming experiment with 1 year old honey water mycelium)
