Is this LC any good?
    #23168311 - 04/29/16 08:03 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I'm finally getting back into growing after a several year long break.

Started off by getting my hands on some spores and knocking up a honey LC. After one week this is how it looks - the mycelium tends to settle at the bottom without creating one big cloud. It looks quite healthy but I just need a second opinion - is it OK if the myc doesn't group together and stays seperate, whilst floating towards the bottom, or is this sign of contam?

Is it ready for testing, or should I wait a few more days to let the myc finalize in the jar?

I can't help you i don't do my own LC. But i was curious, what are all the many little brown spots in there?

The myc is light brown because of the honey LC colouring, but the lighting makes it look darker than it really is. Unless its contaminated, I'm not entirely sure yet.

So all those little dots are separate little colonies of myc that are colored by the honey?

Yeah they are. Trouble is they aren't forming one large fluffy cloud like an LC should look, and they fall to the bottom of the jar instead of remaining suspended.

There is no way to tell if an LC is contaminated other than by using it. Honestly, it doesn't sound good to me. My LC formed a shape and stuck together the very few times I've used it. It kind of created a little myc monster that I could only break up by vigorously swirling the liquid.

My first grow was MS straight to rye berry jars and it worked out great. LC might work out great for you but it might just be another opportunity for contams to be introduced

Also, my only contaminated jar so far occurred after this procedure: spore syringe > liquid culture > rye berries.

LC's are very prone to contamination and no one recommends going from MS to LC.

Most people clean their cultures through agar transfers and then inoculate their LC with a clean agar chunk.

On the other hand, I've also had success with MS > LC > rye berries accept for that one jar that contaminated. Although they haven't yet made it to fruiting, they're currently colonizing in a monotub so I can't tell you how likely it is that your MS to LC will survive.

I would get some Petri dishes and agar agar and read up on these agar Teks:

Which ever sounds easier to you.

Once again, if you ask me, your LC doesn't sound right.

If you still have some spores I would just shoot those puppies straight into your jars in a still air box

Those small things are mycelium clinging to sediment in your lc. AS said already you can't be certain whether or not the lc is clean until you use it.
Just knock up a plate of agar or a small amount of grain before you go ham with it. You can do this at anytime btw. Also, don't use honey for lc, there are better options like grain water and malt that provide stronger and faster growth. And then I just noticed you started the lc off with spores. That is not how its done guy. If intending to do LC its best to start your spores out on agar which is the best way to identify purity of the culture. Spores syringes are commonly dirty.

Someone should make an up to date tek on lc.

My honey LC kicked ass. If OP thinks he had good sterile procedure while inoculating the Honey LC he should let that grow out a little bit more. From the looks of the picture it could be okay but my mycelium all clumped together :/ it doesn't look done let if you ask me. I wouldn't toss it but don't rely on it to work lol.
