Its not really about not wanting them. Its about getting them to fruit uniformly on top. They fruit nicer when all they can do is fruit off the top. And if there's small aborts on the side or fruits you can't get to they can rot and ruin your tub.

People don't like side pins because if left there un-noticed and not removed during the flushes, then they can rot from being too wet and left down along the side for too long and can cause issues, so iv heard

Hmm. Maybe I'll try the liner next time. It seems the liner would also prevent water pooling on the sides of the sub too. I figured more surface area, more fruits.

Because you can keep the surface nice and moist, and not too wet with good fae. This takes a keen eye and a seasoned mister. Otherwise they'll pin where it's better conditions. Aka the sides. I don't use liners at all and I use clear trays. I blame side pins for bad surface conditions. Not really because of light, because I always have light on the sides and don't get side pins.
