How do you store your grains? I bought a fifty lb bag of whole oats about six months ago. I have used maybe 1/3 of it. I have the top portion of the bag rolled up and the bag just sitting on the garage floor. How long do you think they will remain usable.

I would rather buy a new bag There not that expensive, and to risk a grow wouldn't be worth it in my opinion. Buuut the cheap Mexican in me is saying fuck that they'll be good for one more grow as long as they have been kept dry. But like I said totally not worth the head ache of failing when you could of gotten a new bag.

Why buy a new bag? You could lay those oats out on bed made of moldy bread loafs and as long as the oats aren't directly decomposing they'll be good to go.
Anything on those oats, as far as mold goes, is going to be killed during your pressure cooking cycle. I store my grain in a dusty as all hell storage space, and they sit their for many months between grows.
OP, use the oats. Make sure you're pressure cooking for 2 hours at 15 psi.

I'd just say be careful for weevils. I've had about 50-100lbs of WBS get weevils after a few months of sitting unused. (stocked up on bulk because it was on sale) Trying to prep the grain with the weevils became too much of a hassel for me and I ended up throwing it all out. You could still use it if it works out for you, but I've had two unpleasant experiences with weevils. Have had a longer shelf life and more pleasant overall experiences with rye berries and will never go back to WBS. Either way, good luck to ya.

Good point HowToGrow, bugs can certainly be an issue with any food/grain during storage.

My first bag of grain (sorghum) had weevils I just soak it for 30 mins to an hour in a pot drowning a majority of them before the 24hour soak, still had dead weevils when sterilised and colonizing/fruiting the fruits didnt seem to mind I only do 4 to 5 quart jars a week also.

I have a tight sealing black bucket I put my sorghum into. The rest sits in the sack it came in, in the house. I've seen a mate's 25kg bag of rye get decimated by some weevil type bug. Ate ALL the grain, left just the husks behind. Was a fat waste.

Weevils are no joke, find a better way to store those.
