A Major Reason for Keeping the Humidity in Your Spawn Lab Around 50%.

High humidity in your spawn lab causes your filters to become water logged. Water logged filters wick in contamination spores. If you have a spawn lab try to keep the humidity of the lab at or around 50%. Too low of a humidity encourages the premature drying out of the grain medium.

Would be a bitch for me to get humidity down to 50% all year round where I live, especially in summer. I can see how humidity can be a problem though, even more so for people using cellulose SFDs. Mold grows right on top of them.

I've never seen that problem, and my RH where I live stays around 60-80% in the Summer. I do run AC in the room during Summer, but I doubt it's making that big of a difference.

Seen mold form on top of those filters a few times due to ultra high humidity in the spawning lab. A soak in some 10% bleach water and a trip through the sterilizer and the filters worked just fine.
Although the sterile equilibrium of the labs where the mold formed on top of said filter disks were far less than ideal, shall we say.
The humidity correlation of spawning lab(s) and filters wicking in contamination becomes even more prevalent on the paper thin filter patches of spawn bags.

Like I said, I haven't seen it myself. But I do believe it can happen. Or maybe my AC does more than I think. I haven't measured room RH in a long time.

I could definitely see that happening. I haven't used bags in years, but it seems totally plausible. Those things really do need better filters.

That is not encouraging. Aside from living in high humidity all year round, I use what might possibly be the thinnest SFDs ever created. They are thinner than paper. Maybe I will buy some real deal SFDs in the future.
