Hybrid Mushrooms?
    #23152174 - 04/25/16 01:57 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hi,

I believe, some time ago I saw in a mushroom forum a posting from someone who said he would create hybrid mushrooms. like new strains of the oyster mushroom, by somehow cross-pollinating two different varieties. Is that possible? And if, are there photos? How to do that?

I would love to see a hybrid of the yellow and blue oyster (green?), or a hybrid of the blue and the pink oyster (lilac?).

:lolsy:

Yes strains in the same species can be crossed but it doesn't work like that and they sure as hell don't pollinate.

Mushrooms are not plants, in fact, mushrooms are more related to us than they are to plants. Mycelium breathes oxygen and releases C02, just like us, while plants do the opposite. Also Mycelium is not the "root" of a mushroom like what roots are to plants. Plants use photosynthesis to extract energy from the sun's rays while Mycelium digests organic matter.

I am not sure if one can cross two oyster species, that question is better off asked in the Gourmet and Medicinal mushroom forum. This forum is specifically for psychoactive mushrooms so most of us here have more experience with those.

I will say that for example, Cubensis, which is the most commonly grown active mushroom species, can in fact be used to create hybrids. This has been done countless times. The PE6 strain is a hybrid for example. Keep in mind that PES, A+, B, PE, MDK etc etc. are all Psycilobye Cubensis strains while for example the regular oysters (Pleurotus ostreatus) are AFAIK a different species than a pink oyster (Pleurotus Djamor) so I doubt hybrids can be made between them. Even if they were crossed, that doesn't mean that a new colour would emerge, like when mixing paint or when a child makes a mess with crayons.

There are two ways one can make hybrids and both are explained here. As I explained above, both strains need to be of the same species or else it would be like trying to mate a cat with a dog.

Yes, I knew about what mushrooms are. I know the five big kingdoms: fauna, flora, bacteria, amoebia, fungi. I like the helpful and interesting URL, and followed it. Big thanks!

Do a forum search for rattle snake venom and you shall find what you seek.

That is not really required for making hybrids when using the same species. It is also a bit complicated and expensive for a begginer/amateur to use.

That's for mixing different species.

yes hbrid mushrooms are possible. first do a 12 cycle one a mono culture where you print, agar, fruit, clone and repeat sometimes it takes up to 15 cycles to get one mono culture trait. then at the same time you want to do the other speices to want to mix with its traits at same level of 12 to 15 cycles. The key to next part is have like 75 to 80 petria and cultures to spear. cause you pin them agaist each other on  a spore to spore fright to death to see which genes live. after they meant in middle of petri dish to cut an isolate circle around the muntant cell into morer agar. then of course fruiting it, then cloning the fruit to mix with parent speices three to five more cycles. then stablization of three more spore print to fruit cycle. and done

Yeah I do it now. I have hybrid of the two best strains B+ and AA+ with a simple method. Here the first test flush result...18g dried.

My good old freind robert morry spend four years trying his best to hybrid Claviceps purpurea with Lentinula edodes. He did make it work, even got him a big government job. Then died of gang green three months later, point is good big or dont try either way is cool.

why did he want to breed it with a slow to fruit mushroom like shiitaki?

what government agency gave him funding?

I also think, to create new mutations of mushrooms. I do that already with chili plants (Capsicum): we shoot heavy x-ray concentrations on chili seeds. Many die. But those that survive and germinate, are the interesting ones. Of those, some develop to strange plants that don't survive. Some develop to strange plants that survive but fail to fruit. Some develop to normal plants with normal fruits. But some, and again these are the most precious ones, develop to plants that fruit and develop unusual chili peppers. We call them X-CHILIES (on Facebook, too). Such a new X-CHILI strain needs to be grown fro at least seven plant generations (F7), in order to stabilize the new features and attributes. F7 plants an later ones are stable, means their seeds will create similar plants and won't lose or change the new features again.

I am intending to start developing some X-SHROOMS, but I have to find out, what X-Ray concentrations will do the trick with spores without killing all of them or not causing any change.

I think some survive but only god know what trait it have. We know mutants can be stronger. Make the x shrooms grow. Remember to send everyone prints in a few years.

maybe try a black light or different filter of light. That might induce mutation

You would have more luck and genetic damage/mutation with a uv-c light.

Supposedly you can cross species with rattlesnake venom. It wouldn't be called 'cross pollination' though lol... Look it up.
