BRF Jar Colonization Questions
#23157985 - 04/26/16 05:11 PM (8 years, 8 months ago) |
|

I just reached the two week mark and Im about 25% there. I followed a 1;2;1 1 cup water to 2 cups verm 1 cup brf and now that I see Im only at 25% after 14 days I am starting to get paranoid that my jars are too dry or too cold. I am hoping that I just need to continue to be patient because I have been getting paranoid and researching like crazy.
Is a steady temp of 70.4 alright? Ik its slow but I dont think its too cold right?
Should I flip the jars? Heard this helps growth.
I have been colonizing with the inoculation holes tapped shut oops I un taped them will growth speed increase?
Is 1;2;1 not enough water, its been 2 weeks and I feel like they might be too dry, just paranoia?
Thanks, If anyone wants to see some pics I can upload some.

Your temp is fine. Be patient. Sounds like your mixture is fine. Give them as much time as they need.
Flipping the jars only really helps the bottom colonize if the substrate is a bit too compressed. Yes, they will colonize a bit better with your holes untaped. As you've probably read, Gas Exchange is important.
Pics always help.

(On my phone, excuse bad english) 70 alright, no worries.
Dont flip jars, dont move them at all. You should,ve added a dry verm layer on top, right? That,s your filter, no need for tape. If you move jars, dry verm layer shifts, you fuck up
1:1:2 ratio, "2" being verm, you should be alright.
25% in 2 weeks s,all right, spores take time to germinate, substract those days.
Be patient ma nigga! All good

Thanks guys you relieved my paranoia I decided that im going to be patient and not check on them for a while but I just broke that rule so I could upload a few pictures. They wouldn't go on the thread for some reason so they are just on my account. The growth is exploding now that I took the tape off

Dang I really messed up with the tape on the lids. In two weeks I went from 0 to 25% and in the past two days (since I've taken the tape off) I went from a quarter to a third of the way colonized. It probably took some time to germinate but still I think taking the tape off really sped (speeded) it up.

I see alot of people on here thinking they need to tape the holes shut. The verm acts a protective barrier so theres no need to worry. I'm sure that helped slow your colonization down. Let them bitches breathe

Dam I just wanna update everyone and say do not tape your inoculation holes shut! Now its been 5 days since I untapped them and I am at over 50% colonized. In 2 weeks I went from 0-25 and in the past 5 days I've gone from 25-50+. In addition to the increased FAE the temperature has also increased to 75-76 degrees from the mycelium growth. Oh and get this my least colonized jar has become my most colonized jar. I have a theory about this though, I think that jar had the least amount of free air space so when it got free air exchange it took off like crazy and also I think it was the one that I put the most spores in.

Its an old lizzard terrerium I think it will work out pretty well. Once again im on my phone so I cant upload pictures to the thread but I have pics on my account gallery. That rear left one is almost completely colinized on the outside.

I don't. You should really look in a SGFC. Dont waste a month colonizing your jars to waste them in a poor fruting chamber. Cost like $30 to make, maybe less.

Make an sgfc. Better results pretty much guaranteed. Trust the design it works like a charm.

Ok my plan for an SGFC is under way Can I just set it on top of jars to elevate it? And will it drip or get wet underneath at all? Then I only have 4 one pint cakes should I just do four for my first grow, inoculate more, or cut them in half and have eight? My friends and I will use every last shroom I grow so the more the merrier.

Yes you can in fact set your FC on top of some empty jarsits what I've done and never experienced an issue Just try to keep it elevated sort of.

Follow the pf tek to the tee and dont deviate from it at all. Use the search bar and watch the videos, ill tell you that before someone else does. Yes you can elevate it with jars. Dont cut your cakes in half. It doesnt matter how many jars you do. Yes it will drip I keep a tray underneath my sgfc along with a towl. And whatever you want to yeild, double the amount of jars to get just that. Good luck young grasshopper

don't cut cakes the inside has some small non colonized parts usually and contams love wet brf , however you can stack cakes to increase yields given your sgfc is tall enough and the cakes are wide enough to stack you just dunk and roll and top the middle with vermiculite (the top of the first cake, and top the cake on top with verm also

Gonna add to what the others said. Don't bother cutting them in half. Chance for contams. why chance it.

Cool I gathered more materials today and Im going to inoculate 4 more jars tomorrow hopefully they will catch up buy I don't think it really matters if they don't. I made a space for the SGFC and put down the jars. Then put some tin foil underneath to catch the water but when I set the SGFC on top of it and it wasn't quite level does this matter? and my bulb is a daytime 5000k LED is that good enough? From what I've researched it is but I have been wrong a couple of times now. Thanks for keeping this thread rolling guys more question coming soon.

^^^^this is what I did bro. I use a 6500k bulb I bought at walmart for 10 bills. Light is really just a pinning trigger and gives a direction for the fruits to grow in. I would just figure out a way to keep it level lol.....shouldn't be that hard to do...i hope lmao. You still have plenty of time before full colonization anyways, just go buy all the right materials in the meantime.

light is important for mushroom growth, caps in particular. LEDs are often either way too expensive or not bright/powerful enough. a 23w CFL is all you need.
