Why bother germinating/colonizing on agar, then transferring to grain when I can just germinate/colonize on the grain to begin with?
Seems like an unnecessary extra step / risk of contam.
Making a syringe is fast.

If you do it in a SAB, any contaminate that you'll encounter was likely already inside of the spore print. Then you can take clean mycelium from the petri (Pasty plates) and transfer to another.

no spore prints are 100% clean so agar ensures clean inoculant. you'd still need a SAB to make the spore syringe. you can get away with open air inocs through SHIPs but its not good practice.

Yeah, I was going to start working with agar when I stopped growing years ago, but for this next project, I don't really want to invest in plates and other supplies I don't have at the moment.
I just want to grow some fruits as quickly and cost effectively as I can for the next 3 months before I have to move.
Then once I settle down maybe I will delve into agar.
*EDIT*
Hmmm, I see the point you all are making now. Will be a great waste of time if I think I have clean colonized jars then when I go to spawn, find out that they weren't clean because my innoculant was contammed.
Maybe I'll buy some plates and medium then.
Any recommendations on where/what kind of plates to get for cheap starter plates?

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208976 one bottle of premix agar is like 15 bux or something. get like 20+ of the minirounds so you have blanks waiting to transfer to.
<$50 investment & it will return so much moar

If I decide to do agar, can I go straight from a print to the agar?
My prints are so old, someone had mentioned giving them time to hydrate if I made syringes.
Will they be able to hydrate if I go straight from a print to agar?
What would be a good method for that transfer? A flame sterilized scalpel/razor and just scrape some spores up and then wipe them on the agar? Or cut into the agar to deposit spores?

print to agar
for transfer I like sterile cotton swabs (no flame sterilizing). just a light drag will do.
edit: the print he used there was 5+ years old so it's worth a shot

Thank you guys so much for the info and suggestions. It's great to see the community is still very active and helpful after all these years. Cheers!
I guess I'm going agar after all. Time to make a shopping list!

Anyone have suggestions on affordable tyvek sleeves? Best price I can find on amazon is almost $2 per pair.
Or can I just reuse 1 pair? I've never used the thing, I just used to wipe my arms with alcohol.

If you wrap them in foil (I roll them up then wrap them in foil)and then PC for 30 min they will be sterile for each use. I have a few pairs that I wrap as stated above and then pc all at once for the next few sab procedures. You can place the freshly pc'd rolls into a new ziploc bag to keep them clean until you need them.
Bare arms are fine as long as you wash and alcohol very well but I just feel more safe with them on.

Cheers!
If only there were somewhere local to buy them.
I don't like buying stuff online
