"A sci fi colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller. RimWorld follows three survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of known space. Inspired by the space western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, and the epic scale of Dune and Warhammer 40,000."
(if you don't know Dwarf Fortress, look it up.)
"Manage colonists' moods, needs, individual wounds, and illnesses. Engage in small-team tactical gunplay. Fashion structures, weapons, and apparel from metal, wood, stone, cloth, or futuristic materials. Fight pirate raiders, hostile tribes, rampaging animals, giant tunnelling insects and ancient killing machines. Tame and train cute pets, productive farm animals, and deadly attack beasts. Watch colonists develop relationships with family members, lovers, and spouses. Discover a new generated world each time you play. Build colonies in the desert, jungle, tundra, and more. Manage quirky colonists with unique backstories, traits, and skills. Learn to play easily with the help of an intelligent and unobtrusive AI tutor."
"The AI Storyteller RimWorld is not designed as a competitive strategy game, but as a story generator. It's not about winning and losing - it's about the drama, tragedy, and comedy that goes on in your colony. The game creates events like pirate raids, trader arrivals, and storms. But these events aren't random. RimWorld uses an AI Storyteller (modeled after the AI Director from Left 4 Dead) who analyzes your situation and decides which event she thinks will make the best story.
There are three storytellers to choose from: The carefully-paced Cassandra Classic, the slower-paced, building-oriented Phoebe Chillax, and the totally unpredictable Randy Random."
see this is the thing. you can get the game for 30 bucks right...
this is what you get: "Instant access to the latest alpha version as well as all updates up to and including the final game. Plus, get the Prototype Pack of five early game designs that eventually became RimWorld."
so it's in alpha stages now -- but now only is the concept intriguing but i also thought this was interesting, and definitely different...
you pay 45$ for this: "Name in Game Pack ($45) Put a name (probably yours) into the game and appear as a pirate raider, colonist, traveler, or trader. Players will recruit, command, and fight you for all time! Includes the Full Game Pack."
but then you can get: "Backstory in Game Pack ($125) Like Name in Game, but you also get to write a unique character background, including backstories and skills. Write yourself as an interplanetary detective, an entrepreneur, an ex-artist, or anything else you can think of! (Content must be fictionally coherent.)"
or finally, for a full backer, i suppose, in the games ultimate development time: "Pirate King Pack ($200) Like Backstory in Game, but your character will be a pirate leader who commands a group of raiders. You can write a more intense, stronger character, and they'll play a key role. In “negotiations”, your character will be the pirate representative."
i don't understand how this game works exactly, i gotta check out some videos. but it sounds and looks pretty cool.

One of them alternative games, where you protect over your city from real world problems, haha, they can be pretty fun. I do wonder how the battle gameplay would be, also wondering if anyone is giving rimjobs in rimworld.

This game is ridiculously awesome. The battle mechanics are surprisingly fleshed out, and are on par with XCOM in the squad management sense. Except instead of instanced squad combat, it's more along the lines of drafting all your people and putting them in defensive positions around your base. Cover mechanics are included, as well as weapon type, quality, and skill of user.
Also, its got that good old Dwarflike base building feel. Bit more focus to aesthetic, people will get sad and go mad if your base is an absolute turd by the time you can afford miniguns. The AI storyteller helps out a lot as well, it's never particularly boring. Unlike DF, you can't just expect a siege and a trade caravan every season and have a standing army prepared for it. Also, there is a "win" condition in launching your colonists to space in a ship, ala flight of the phoenix. The learning curve isn't a cliff, though, by extension, you can't do as much cool DF stuff.
I posted a link to my LP here a little bit ago: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22702155#22702155
Started a new one a little bit ago with alpha 13 release.
