hmm, my pans look normal on CVG I just get shitty pin sets. they love high FAE tho so I aim too dry and then mist lightly every other day to keep them from drying out.
rhizo... IDK man, but IME pans rarely look rhizo at all on subs unless something is wrong, most pan myc on subs looks more bacterial-thick growing almost an inch off the sub rather than the nice thin rhizos stretching out.

the last two runs I've done, the jars sat after full colonization for about a week or two, so I think they were just ready to go, cause they exploded off the grains. I use clear liners so I can see the growth.
Here's a pan cambo mini tub I have going on the same sub, but diff past. run.

hmm, what am I looking at, cased grains or sub with a casing layer? I've always used very thin casing layers, 1/8-1/4" thick so the myc just explodes through while in fruiting. no time to wait for 30% or whatever on the casing layer, just let it do its thing while pin set comes in.
that last pic does look very healthy tho!

neither. just the sub colonizing.
I'll case it when it's done in a few days
i use about a 1/4" cause i live in a dry climate, and fruit when I case at full colonization

that's why I can't figure out whats going wrong with my mono's.
I think that I might be spawning a bit too wet, so I pull the lid off to let it dry out to avoid contaming, and then it contams.
im gonna make my sub dryer next time cause i soak my grains

yeah I like to err on the dry side myself, can always add water later during fruiting. overdoing things like taking the lid off to letting it dry etc often back fires IME. better to just do slight adjustments and just let it do its own thing. giving good fae without drying it up is harder in drier climates, naturally, so you probabling got some tweaking between rh/fae to do before getting pans to thrive. cubes are more like a weed, they just wanna grow no matter what. pans are a bit more picky.

yeah totally.
my fan should be here today so I'll finally be able to give good fae. i've been winging it and dealing with fuzzy feet for like a year.
hopefully the cambos turn out.

I grabbed a digital unit with probe and pager combo for cheap. Then made a quick log in 10 min temp increments.
Had a pot of almost boiling water and cooler. Once temp plateaus, add some more water. Until you hit the right range. Then hold 2+hrs. If your sub bag is similar the next time, you will notice the timeline:temps will be very close.

yeah I've been looking at coolers lately so I can get a dialed past. method
you use a pillowcase? or what for the sub

I'm not really sure a fan is the solution for you, if the air is dry you dont wanna force it into your tub. rather loosen the bottom holes a bit, just make sure to mist if the myc under the holes seems to be drying out. that's a bitch for me, but misting every 2-3 days is fine to me.

ive ran em with literally no poly in the bottom.
I just don't have enough ambient air moving in the room. sometimes ill let the hood run to move stuff around but it's loud and usually don't.

haha, oh man, maybe that's why mold sets in? if the myc dries up you wouldn't see much pinning either.. but idk man, hard for me to sit here and tell you how you should dial in your stuff just try to be on top of things, mist whenever it looks dry and let it have good fae. I'm sure you'll figure it out and make them pans thrive!

This has been very enlightening, as I plan on trying to tackle pans myself soon. Thanks for sharing, Phil and thanks for all the info Space!

I use a mycobag with 4ish L of sub. Pasteurize, cool, dump in a pint and seal.
So my sub, which is a little under field capacity, doesn't get any wetter during pasteurization.
You can always soak or bottom water once you hit the fruiting phase. Spacechildo mentions that preference too

update: it's because of my lazy man past. method.
my latest cube tub is triching out as we speak.
I have since bought a thermometer, and will be refining my process.
in better news, I'm gonna case two cambo tubs that are super strong.
edit: 100% pasteurization issue. after running it with a thermometer right now for some casing, and comparing how long it took to get the core temp high enough, there's no way my sub was getting hot enough to properly pasteurize.
for one reason or another those cambos worked out, and I know the casing will be good this time, so I'm crossing my fingers. casing and putting into fruiting tonight.
