If you want softer agar just use less agar not more water. Food grade agar can vary a bit, also some media add gel strength. Some trial and error may be required.

I've been using Karo brand "light corn syrup" with the ingredients: Corn syrup, salt, Vanilla extract. I just noticed that your tek just said karo but not light corn syrup. I also noticed the brand you have Crown's ingredients are: Glucose, Glucose-Fructose, Water, Salt, Vanillin. Are glucose, glucose-fructose, and water the same as corn syrup?

And is the vanilla extract going to cause any issues? or is that the same as vanillin?

There is some generic brand of light corn syrup that has 18g of sugar per two tablespoons vs the karo light corn syrup only has 10g. Which of these would be best? or neither?

Karo = corn syrup. Same thing. Yours will be fine. We only use a small amount anyways. Any difference will be also small.

yes, after you mix the powdered agar with your other stuff(like potato flakes and karo) you PC it.

You'll find varying answers but since you're asking here...

You will need:
-1 pack of Glad mini rounds
-micro pore tape
-a drill with a 1/4" bit or very hot nail
-paper towels
-Foil
-PC
-Bar of agar agar
-Potato flakes
-Karo or Honey
-Coffee grinder
-And of course a PC, even a shitty ass one will work

When you pour your agar how warm is it? does it solidify right after you pour? Or would that be heating it up too much?

If it's liquid it's fine...  It shouldn't solidify completely until after you remove it from the PC..  Unless you're lazy/slow.

Mine's hot as fuck when I pour it, takes another 5 minutes to get them wrapped and in the PC, usually still mostly liquid at that point, gelling up a bit though.

I'm not sure if I can access these Glad mini rounds, however I saw some similar containers that say they're resistant to extreme temperatures and microwavable.
Their size is a bit bigger too. Would it still work?

Definitely trying this out  when my A/PE show up this week.

I have LME, rye soak stevia leaf and dextrose.

Do you normally supplement grain water? Or use as-is?

Got 16 ziplock (118ml square) containers and 10 glass petri set

Will definitely start a recipe book

Anyone still use nutritive yeast? I never replaced mine since it added a cloudiness.  Likely grain soak has decent B vitamins

I use nutritional yeast in my no pour agar.  It's already dyed with food coloring and opaque with potato flakes, I mean, not much to lose at that point, where visibility is concerned.

Ah, I have never used flakes. Guess that makes sense.    So tempted to grab a Büchner funnel, paper and a vacuum flask.  Handy for lots of stuff

Is this 'micropore' tape and can I use two layers of it on my pastyplate lids?

Thanks

yeah, nah, haha. micro-pour tape is a cloth-like material. lookf for 3M on the package, which indicates it's hole size(i believe). i just ordered some off amazon, since i was getting some other stuff anyways, and shipped free. places like CVS/Walgreens should have it, if youre in the states.

EDIT - also wanted to say, i have now used both the Gald Mini Runds, and the Ziplock squar ones. both work really well for pasty plates. the glad min rounds lid stays on tighter, which is a good thing for preservation, but the easy open lid on the ziplocks makes for easy transfers/inoc. the ziplocks are also much easier to see though. also, the ziplocks are easier to wrap in foil, and stack much better. also i can fit more in my PC, heh.. overall, i will still be using both, for now. dont have a favorite, yet.

I like the ziplock squares too, but the indented bottom forces me to pour more agar per dish than I need to in the rounds. I really wish the bottom didn't indent so much, because I actually really like the lids.

So, I'll stick to the gladware. Though I did see someone post a ziplock round, so I'll be keeping an eye out for those.
