A couple of my friends are hiking around in New Zealand and they just sent a few pics of mushrooms for me to identify. I would suspect they are of Amanita Muscaria and would have no doubt confirming it if they had found them in the PNW but I'm not too familiar with the down under and their mushrooms, so just to be safe: He said they were hiking around in a dense pine forest, so dense that there really wasn't any underbrush just lots of fungal growth.
Well that's all the description I got out of the email but sounds right to me and they look like picture perfect specimens, just a lot more scaly than I've ever seen
Tell me what you think.

Peace - @cro

Those sure look like Amanita muscaria subspecies flavivolvata. The first photo shows some parallel rings of volval tissue at the base of the stem. The second photo shows the yellow color of the universal veil tissue pretty well.

Happy mushrooming!

they certainly are, insofar as i have been exposed to the published material on the genus.

you will also likely observe that fresh healthy specimens will demonstrate this yellow bruising, most noticable in the universal viel tissue, transiently in the stipe. it will bruise rather quickly but lightly then fade slowly. ime it is usualy gone or hardly noticable within an hour.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Im an aussie - my first shrooming experience was on liberty caps i bought in the south island.
I think that Psilocybes have been better studied in NZ than in Australia = Buichanan's article is pretty good, and he states that there are a few strange species associated with wilderness areas that are yet to be classified or described.
Ive got a mate over there up north as well.

Librty caps were my first real high also and my favorate mushroom of all. However I pick less of them each year. None last year but the year before went to Canada and partied up there with some friends.

I went out mountain biking yesterday saw the same mushrooms as above, must have see 5 different species of mushrooms in total.... if only I had the knowledge to identify them.... must come with time I suppose. They're still growing in my garden as well, I water then now and then. No positive ID on the ones in garden yet.. here they are again if anyone in New Zealand has any clues -> http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/normosb/mushrooms.htm

I have found them in coastal taranaki not far from the surf in old cow manure , they seem not to extend too far inland due too frosts no doubt, and the international surf scene spreading the spores. just a rumour I heard :mushroom2:
