Hey friends,
Finally my first harvest! Thanks everyone for all the advice on here.
I think i waited to long before harvesting and from what i read it’s not unusual for the heads to go dark/black, especially aborts.  No funky smell though from any of them. Took a whiff from each one lol.

Do these look safe?

This is a non-sterilized BRF jar that sat in my cabinet for three weeks...  I made one extra jar from my last batch & thought I could still use it this week.  No idea this would happen so quickly.  Beautiful shades of red and yellow :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

Actually i got my answer.
The black heads are aborts but the reason why they abort is cause of too much water. Learned something new. The shrooms are still good and i cut them in half and saw nothing bad. 🙌🏽
So if you see aborts, You are overwatering!

This jar was inoculated a week ago, and I noticed these orange dots on some of the burst grains. I haven't seen a contam like this before. Does anyone have any idea what it could be out of curiosity?

Hi all,

Gave my jars their first good shake yesterday. This is them today. Do they look ok?

Thanks in advance!

Been getting quite a bit of contamination recently.

The yellow stuff probably some bacteria such as found on skin.

The mold looks like trich?

These either from technique or PC cycle probably.

Looking for some feedback on what the white stuff is, it's surrounded by something cloudy.

It's from the spore print? Loop is sterilized ok as cooled on agar and not a problem.

Just wondering if anyone else has encountered it,

That green is aspergillus or penicillium.
Both won`t survive a pc cycle, step up your sterile works.
There may be some mycelium, but meshed in with molds, i think there´s some pin mold within.
I´d start over with new petris.
Maybe explain your sterile technique at bit more

Thx, I'm sterilising glass Petri's and agar in the PC for about 30mins.

I setup the SAB, spray some antibacterial and wipe inside down, wait 10mins.

I use some glass jars inside SAB to act as floor.

Once PC cools down a bit, say 1 hour, transfer Petri's in foil into SAB. Tighten agar bottle lid, transfer into SAB,.

Unwrap Petri's on top of jars. Wait till agar is cooled down. Pour Petri's.

Pretty sure this is all ok so far.

Open up spore print inside SAB.

Using small meth alcohol lamp, flame nichrome loop red hot, then into SAB, open a petri clamshell style, into agar to cool loop.

Scrape a bit of spore off print, open petri and streak or dap spores into agar. Wrap with cling wrap once all Petris done.

Using gloves and use ISO a few times, using facemask, maybe I need to shower and use clean shirt to cover arms more.

The white pin mold almost always appears where the loop has been.

Sometimes I use a scalpel to scrape spores and in that case it is too hot (nichrome cools quickly) and sometimes I get no germination or pin mold.

So the bacteria and pennicillium don't survive the PC cycle.

I get a lot of the pin mold meshed in, could this be from dirty spore prints?

Sorry for long response :thanx:

Try to streak a zigzag pattern, not a straight line.

This way mycelium may grow away from molds or bacteria.
Maybe try sterile swabs for streaking, and just use a tiny amount of the print.

Hey, that's all great advice actually, will keep trying. 5 shrooms to you once I get to 50 posts.

Here's another pic.

It's like the mycelium is surrounded by something killing it, or it's just some mold producing bacteria (is that possible?)

Did try sterilised some swabs in the PC wrapped in foil, not much luck though.

Streak, and streak the streak. Tiny bit of print.

Thanks again goat!

I can´t see clearly but it looks very fuzzy for being mycelium.
People often see these halo outer rings surrounding the mycelium.
I don´t know the true science behind, but i think it´s growing under the agar surface,
moving on with the leading edges.
Maybe it depends on the culture, but for sure on the agar itself.
What`s your agar recipe?

Yeah I've seen a small clear halo surrounding good mycelium.

This has some colour and is a lot bigger.

It is fuzzy. Tampanensis spores. Nothing like good tamp mycelium which grows evenly in circles. This is unorganized blotchy.

I use PDA, boil up a potato 20mins, add raw cane sugar and agar.

I've tried LME 50% and agar 50%, I still had the same problem. So I ruled that out.

Maybe I should try premixed agar to find out, worth a try I guess.

It's a head scratcher for sure. I guess I will try work on my sterile technique and try a different source of spores.

It's disheartening trying over and over with the same results. The definition of insanity.

Your technique doesn't sound bad. I do think I get fewer contams when I wash or sanitize my arms up to above the elbow (leave them wet afterwards), but skipping that shouldn't lead to everything having mold. I do all my aseptic work shirtless this time of year, not that anybody asked

I'd try another spore print. I agree that the mycelia look too wiry, but I'm assuming tamp mycelia look like cube mycelia. I have no example to compare those to.

of the ~7 or so tubs i've set 3 of them have triched on me at full, or near fully colonized sub before flush 1.  Before these tubs i had 2 make it to flush one  but trich out after harvest and rehydrating.

Just a lot more trich than im used to seeing- anything i can do to combat this besides cleaning all surfaces in my fruiting room where the tubs are?

spawn all looked really clean, these were my strongest dishes of agar. i have a bunch of backup clean cultures in the fridge but i want to find where the trich is getting in my tubs.

Hi all, I could really use your help.

I've exhausted search over the last few days,  I really want to understand what's happening.

Some info:
- this is Ksss, it's painfully slow (day 18).
-  A small section of the underside in the middle of the tub is not colonized (?).
-  This thicker white growth started growing over the thinner myc ~6 days ago. It started just after pinning.
-  Pins are still growing at the same speed as a clean tub I spawned at the same time, but these are dusty white.
- new pins did not form in the white section, existing pins seem to be still growing
- If allowed to dry, the contam looks white. When damp (pictured) it has a dirty off brown look to it.

I don't think it's trich, at least, not "normal trich".

Full sub

Zoomed in section with good and bad growth + pins.

I'd really love some opinions about what's happening in this tub. Is it mold? Bacteria response? Something else? I've not been able work this out.

Thanks!!
