someone pls tell me wtf this is. it never changes color or changes form just grows thick puffy and white, no scent that i can detect but my nose isnt that great at that. outer edges grow very, very similar to halo myc. This is all the same plate latest pics, to earliest. No spores on these, this is just a contam plate.

SpaceBaby, It doesn't look like cobweb mold or any other contamination. It just looks like aerial mycelium which is normal. If anything, it looks like it could use a little more FAE.

I got the lids leaning on the latch at one side of the shoebox. Some of them have dried out and I'm gonna look at every surface. I had 4 shoeboxes pin out the 30 ish, but they got nocced over days.

Myc bless you, BB.

I've taken to using Myc instead of 'god' just cause.

Can someone tell me if this blue spot is bruised mycellium or contam?

I have been unlucky with my latest grows that should have been PE (I have only very few fruits in some other box).
My question is what this contam is and where in the process of swab->agar->lc->grain->bulk this most likely got in.
I am seeing these black sorophores at the end of each string of this so I guessing it could be Rhizopus or Mucor from the first post.

I am fairly sure that my cleaning up on agar was done correctly and that there was no contam hidden in the mycelium but I don't necessarily want to rule that out.

The mycelium was very slow in the petris, took like 1.5x the normal time of another cube. Another thing is that the contam ratio on the jars was kind of high with around 50% of stalled jars and a few slow jars. I probably should have just used the fastest to finish and toss the rest.

My suspicions are also that it was in the coir or that I did not pasteurize it well. There was a certain musty smell to it that disappears after a few cycles of heating and letting it cool in the microwave after the usual bucket tek. For this box I was just doing the  bucket tek.

That's mold. Likely was hiding on the agar plate. Remove the LC from your procedure until you have everything else down. Got pics of the plate?

:whathesaid:

LC is great, when you are already great at everything else. IMO LC is for when you have perfected everything else, and even then you should go into doing it with butterflies in your stomach. That said many people get lucky, I sure did the first few trys but boy it can punish you hard if you get cocky and inoculate all kinds of grain with a bad one.

Can someone weigh in on this tub? I don't want to do anything rash but I've never seen anything like this weird circle in the middle. It's not particularly whispy and it smells okay, but still, I'm getting worried. Should I toss it?

I had all kinds of beginners luck with LC: Shot spores into LC, cloned directly to LC etc. But no more it seems.
Here is shot of the plate which looks pretty good to me. If there is mold it must be same shade of white as the mycelium.

Not super distinct on the overgrown plate, but see the random white dusty look to the edges, sorta disjointed from the rest of the culture. Yep pretty much the same color too.

Not so sure about the edges being suspicious because that grew after I took the samples for the LC. My fridge died and all the plates grew completely towards the edge. I don't see anything obviously wrong.

For example if I held it to the side and saw some more hairiness vertically than I would expect then I would believe that white mold hijacked the plate.
That's not what i see here. The border is not very uniform towards the edge maybe that's what you mean?

Maybe I will keep my best untouched plate of this and move on to the next strain. If I ever try it again with this culture I will be extremely cautious and make a transfer first.
The no LC route is going to suck because of slow growth but I will try that for the next round.

Ok, to simplify, you generally can't see the agar through tomentose mycelium. Mold is thinner, more spotty, more translucent.

Agar to grain may be slower than LC to grain, but not nearly as slow as contaminated LC to grain.

Added more FAE by lifting the other latch under the lid, too. Fuzzy feet are mostly gone, but the shoeboxes are dry — I've been misting for surface conditions but  the whole sub on many may be dry. Noob lesrning to read environment.

Been laid low by hella headaches.../ergo lag after your comment.

Want to add pics, but the headaches are viciously disabling....

after photos whenever wll do new re: post.

Man, I got a little list of folks who I'd like to give these to.:whiteflag::whiteflag::whiteflag:

I do have one malabar fruit that lifted the lid of one of the shoeboxes. :dancer:

Once your pinset comes in and the mushrooms start growing, the surface moisture is less relevant. At that point I would keep an eye on the caps to make sure they don't start to crack from being too dry.

Trich or another mold? [Re: BrownBear]
    #27362563 - 06/25/21 12:21 PM (3 months, 25 days ago)

In this small tub, I see at least seven patches of abnormal mycelia, where there is no fuzz. The upper right spot just began to turn green, so I tossed the tub. (I have no space to bury it.) It's obviously contammed beyond salvation, but can you tell from looks whether this is trich?

Hi, everyone!

I’ve got a bunch of stuff going on because I tried a few different avenues and wasn’t careful about documentation.

These pics are of second agar transfers agar inoc in mason jars, transferred to current plates). Some looks pretty, but also there’s some “wispy” myc, cloudy, myc, and unidentifiable forms. Some have clear contams, and in those cases, the question is whether the surrounding area is salvageable.

Thanks for any advice.   And feel free to make fun of writing directly over the observation sweet spot and the waste of parafilm. I’m still learning!
