Judging by the location of the contamination it could be filter failure.
What filters are you using and what did the culture look like?

Thanks DERRAYLD for the quick response š
The darkening started at the top but I saw some dark spots at the bottom of the jar as well.
I'm curious to know, what kind of contamination is this?
Regarding the filter, Iām not sure what is the filter but here is a picture of it

You reminded me that during pressure cooking the jars the smell of the grain was coming out of the pressure cooker, that didnāt seem right to me!

Is that not normal? I usually smell a little of whatever Iām PCing. I use polyfill filters and theyāre not air tight. I assumed that was expected.

If there's contamination lower down then I will assume this is a case of dirty agar or insufficient pc'ing.

Its a black mold. you can take out a colonized grain away from the mold and then put to agar to clean it up. It might take a couple of transfers but atleast you dont wait for germination if starting from spores a gain

How should I dispose of the grains? Whatās the safest way to do it without health risk or contamination of the grow space?

In the trash or a compost pile. There's billions of mold spores already in your home that you are already breathing daily - it's no different than throwing away moldy bread.

All my cultures look like these: a mixture of tomatose and rhizomorphic growth. Is the fuzzy stuff a contaminant?

Sozo tough to say man.but looking at the last pic it most likely is something unwanted riding along Could be why your seeing such thick ropes that myc trying to hurry the fuck away
I would make transfers from the leading edge of the ropes in hopes you leave the tomentose shit behind .
After transfe throw it to some grain and see what it does for experimental purposes. If u want

These are both 43 days out and havenāt made any headway with the grains on the outside of the jar. Both inoculated with LCs from clones. What thinks you?

43 days sounds like a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time.
1-3weeks is more like it. But ye, they dont look good. I bet they smell way off too.

If there is any mycelium at all, mix it with pasteurized h/poo and put outdoors. Manage the conditions (heat, humidity) and you might just get lucky. I always mix contaminated substrate in my garden or flower pots and at least get a fruit or two.
Here's some pinning from badly contam'd grains mixed with newspaper/poo/verm

Oddly enough, there was no detectable odor. But it didnāt smell like mycelium, either. I buried them nonetheless.
Hereās hoping for a backyard miracle.

Thanks for the reply. The truth is that I have taken many transfers from the leading growth already. I have used some to inoculate grain (oats). Some of the grain turns out okay, some is lost to contamination. The grain goes into shoeboxes with coir. I get a good first crop but usually see trich with the second.
