How much of the substrate needs to be colonized before casin
    #2312118 - 02/07/04 03:18 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Hi, how much of the substrate layer needs to be colonized before putting on the casing layer?

I know of an experience where an innoculated substrate is taking 2+ weeks and its about 20% white. I thought this should take 1 week.

What should you check?

The example I saw was where the containers were covered with aluminum foil with air holes, incubated at 83 deg, in a Rubbermaid in Rubbermaid setup. What else can you do?

~thanks~

On your first question, once they are fully colonized give them another 2 days and then they should be good for casing.

On your jars not colonizing just give them time...some strains take longer. When they get about 75% turn them upside down to help gas exchange.

Good luck man and just be patient.

Yeah, don't case before 100%. That would definitely lead to contams.

Sorry let me clarify, lets say the BRC cakes were already birthed, broken up into pieces and mixed with the substrate in a shoebox type container, its been 2 weeks since that time. Why is it taking this long?

~thanks~

what substrate are you using mixed with the BRF cakes? how much did you handle the cakes when breaking them apart? what are your current climatic conditions for your terrarium?

Skippy tek, compost mix, cakes put in baggie then broken into peanut size pieces, shoeboxs are covered with aluminum foil, holes in top, in incubator 83 degrees.

Sorry is this a spawning?  You are trying to innoculate compost mix with cakes?

And then you plan to case the fully 100% white result ?

You may have a contamination problem if you are 2 weeks and 20% however growth may just be slow, especially if you say patted down the spawn so it was less airy.

Either way patience is what you will have to exume my friend
