Caps Splitting
    #2309105 - 02/06/04 03:13 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

I posted this question in Mushroom Cultivation but nobody could figure out what was going on. If anyone here could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Upon checking my casings today I found a pretty interesting problem. Many of my mushroom's caps have split. They've either prematurely pulled their veil away, or the cap has split into two different sections. I also have a pretty high number of aborts (yesterday they were perfect inch tall mushrooms, today almost a quarter of them have aborted).

I'm pretty sure my humidity and air exchange are fine (I have a PMP with perlite, I also fan/mist once a day) so I can't think of any explanation for this happening.

Here's a picture:

In a PMP, there is too much humidity for casings. Its perfect for cakes, but cakes need a higher humidity than do casings. A casing should get most of its water from the casing material itself, both from the mycelium absorbing it and from evaporation, therefore creating humidity.

Try laying something flat over half of the geolite, that might lower the humidity.

So should I lower humidity or raise it? There seem to be conflicting opinions.

i have had this problem sevral times. just increase your air flow. make sure there is plenty of water in the casing. i wouldn't even use that pump. as long as the perlite sticks to your hand when you touch it ur cool.

So right now I should mist the casing and fan more?

UT looks like they are aborts, having black tops and all. I would pull them.

This sucks.

I checked the casings today and found that one of the casings had stalled (no growth whatsoever during the night, other than the fact half seemed to abort and the other half have their caps starting to pull away when they're less than an inch tall) but the other had grown; but half the caps on the casing that grew had begun to peel away as well.

So, in reaction, I did a few things. First off, I dug up my air wands to see if they were working. They were, so I mixed up the perlite very well in case it had compacted and was restricting air flow. Secondly, I misted both casings heavily (to answer your question preschooler, yes the casings are pulling away from the sides a bit). I then fanned the whole thing.

I'm planning on fanning twice a day now (once in the morning and once at night) and also misting heavily each time. Do you think this will be enough to stop the rest from splitting? Because as it stands right now my yields are going to be significantly reduced by this, to say the least.

Here's a picture taken this morning:

As a side note, the mushrooms with split caps still seem to be growing. The two pictures are of the same group of mushrooms, and you can see they have all increased in size.

I don't know if this matters, but I thought it was odd.

How long was your substrate fully colonized before using it?

I let the casings incubate for around five days before putting them in the fruiting chamber.

Sorry.

The jars were fully colonized for less than two weeks before they were cased.

The substrate was BRF and Verm by the way, if that matters.
