If you don't you get a crushes piece of glad.
Also, just to keep this thread going, wikidzon on grain-water agar. This is cosmicsheep's work. Can't take credit.

i wish i knew how to get the right dilution levels for grainwater... hehe
nice myc!
What dilution? We just replaced regular water with grain water and added agar powder 20 grams / liter.
I thought the whole point of grain water was simple substitution.

Lol yep. I had 8 in there and 5 were smashed. Strange that with the Ziploc Extra Small Squares, instead of being smashed, their lids pop off.
Still not sure which I prefer. Regardless, both containers need modified lids.

Has anyone tried this using those similar pyrex containers with the rubber lids?
These:

Would this work? If so they'd be a much longer lasting, easily attainable alternative to the plastic glad ones.

they could as long as the lids are PP5 but it makes the tiger drop near impossible

Might have a hard time filtering the lids. Personally I hated how slippery glass was and was a major reason i started to experiment with plastics in the first place. I used to use jars for no pour.

Interesting, thanks for the info. Honestly I was kind of blown away that the Glad containers didn't just turn to mush in the PC, so I figured the pyrex kind along with its lid would be fine; glad I asked. I'll check the lid to see what's up.
But, what do you mean the lid might be difficult to filter? Does one not just poke a hole or two and seal with micropore tape or polyfill or whatever?
And I guess I too will go ahead and thank you for this as well; I ended up just going ahead and ordering normal agar for it but the simplicity of this tek made agar actually seem possible for me as a noob and now i'm fascinated by it all. So thanks for that!

i dont get what their problems are with those teks.. the condensation isnt the tek's fault. its the user's fault. i almost posted on that thread before i realized it was 2 years old baha.

That's awful procedure. Never turn your plates upside down or open them for longer than absolutely necessary. If you'd use proper technique in the first place, you wouldn't have to fix things later.
Also, that water that runs out is highly nutritious. It can get to the edge of your jar/plate and let contams creep in.
You just can't cut corners with agar at all.

oh boy
pretty much every grow I've done in the last 1.5 years has been with upside-down pasty plates

Hey Pasty, have you noticed different concentrations of your mix have yielded different results for different strains? While I wasn't exact and didn't take good enough documentation, it seemed my enoki liked it a little heavier in water and potato flakes as opposed to your exact recipe which the oysters did best on?
Or is this a genetics discussion?

More of a genetics/species topic. Even with cubes some will seem to prefer different things. The recipe I have given here is just one to get you started. I strongly encourage everyone to experiment with different media, especially if the growth is not strong or aggressive.

I have some powdered agar I ordered online...
Will 2.5 grams be adequate via this recipe or will I have to adjust depending on what brand/source and consistency(powder, flakes, or bars) of agar I am using or is 2.5 grams of any tiype of agar going to work? Should I do a test run to check the consistency first?
Also, Do you use a slightly wetter agar when germinating spores? If so, how much extra water(or less agar?)?
