ok .. so i've bought two £12 therm/hygrometers.. and apparently their shit.
this brings the expenses to a fair bit over £200
i really need a proper 'analog hygrometer' to ensure the project works.. and one that isn't too much more money.. i am very broke now. i can't find any here on the net. the Americans seem to have them all
can anyone help? b

well now, i'm opting for the straight 'shotgun fruiting chamber'... no incubation bull*
so : box with holes all four sides - raised on four jar supports : 5 inches of damp perlite (tap water through colander then drained) : four cakes on lids (dunk 'n' rolled) : 81 - 83% humidity in chamber - even after misting. (67f) : ambient room temp/humidity = 57% 67f
oh yeah.. and the piece of crap hygrometer.. b

Holes should be all 6 sides, I think you meant that though. If you have five inches of perlite and your holes are drilled exactly to the shotgun FC specifications as laid out on www.mushusroomvideos.com
It will maintain 95-100% humidity pretty much guaranteed if you mist!

-> yeh it was infact six sides
the holes are all correct theres perhaps room for another row of holes on one side right at the bottom.. but i already have ^s of two hundred holes..
should i try taping up some of the upper holes? obviously after i manage to find a proper analog hygrometer so as to get a reliable reading.

so if i where to mist two or three times a day... how many sprays each time...?
is it wise to continue without a hygrometer.. because i've seen posts saying that 90% is not good compared to 95% and my reader has gone (max) up to 86% but for the most part is on 81% (digital hygrometer being used...)
any other indicaters that all is good...? -> like touching a cake to see if it's still damp?
thanks alot b

bob - did you ever get a analog hygrometer?
I am also in UK and I have the same setup, so I am wondering the same. Seen a few but not convinced they will any good at all;

Wow how time flies xD well 7 years on, and still no analog hygrometer.. I haven't had another grow either mind.
Man, i enjoyed growing mushrooms so much... and summer is coming
I had it in mind that my 2nd grow would be a casing, but it's been a while since my last grow and i did have great results with cakes, considering it was a multi-spore. My attempt at a liquid culture failed miserably, so did cloning.. I love the idea of isolating a strain from a petri-dish.
so, i'll skip the hygrometer, (i'm pretty sure my digital hygrometers got water in them and broke, if my memory serves me correctly) When would a hygrometer be used again? Can't believe i haven't had a grow in seven years.. Very keen to get started all of a sudden. : )

honestly, i think most of the TCs and experts will probably tell you that you dont even need a hygrometer. the reason is because with properly made FCs you just dont need it. having all those high humidity requirements in the old incubator-style FCs are outdated. the reason is because the humidity level that really matters is in the micro-climate which is on the surface of the cakes, which you cant measure anyways. now you just need to make a proper SGFC and just mist them when they look dry.
