polyfill filter

I was wondering if you could just use a coffee filter or a cotton ball instead of polyfill. AFOAF doesn't want to go to the store and buy some if either one of these two alternative filters would work.

No, coffee filter won't filter out fine stuff and cotton is a organic material that will rot or mold up when the bottom of it is exposed to constant moisture.

Actually cotton plugs have been and are still heavily used in biochemistry labs all around the world.

if you're substrate is sterile cotton will work, as there wont be anything to break down the cotton...cotton is also a great filter as they're are thousands of tiny mesh like fibers that act as a barrier against contam. they can only get so far in before they are thwarted by all those fibers. another common method for a filter in a lab(at least where i was) was a sponge.
