REISHI on wbs, cardboard + newspaper shreddings
    #2306032 - 02/05/04 04:45 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

boiling water submerged the (mostly) cardboard + (some) newspaper shreddings until it cooled a bit, then it was drained and more boiling water submerged it... let cool, squeezed out as hard as possible with the hands (dont hurt yourself) and mixed evenly w/ wbs spawn... it took a while longer because no incubator was used and it has been cold lately.

(WBS)

that was actually the second one ^^

first one was 100% newspaper shreddings, done exactly the same way (only a pint of wbs used) ... except the newspaper one colonized in 4-5 days, (much much faster than cardboard) and the top of the newspaper was covered with a thin layer of verm (dont ask me why, it was an experiment)

thats it so far!

yay! gotta love reishi

nice pics !

how much newspaper did you use ?
what is the fruiting container ?
At what temps did you incubate them ?

I am asking cause I have just innoculated corn with reishi the first time and wonder how it works out.

I used about a newspaper or two.. for the cardboard I used about 3 medium-small boxes which i tore the coloring off of (just incase it wasnt soi ink)

The fruiting containers are two white buckets... only about 1/10th and 1/5th (approx) full in the two buckets... one buckets much larger than the other (the cardboard)... i usually only fan out once or twice a day and I think its good there is extra room... it builds humidity very easily (had to pour off some water a few times) and the extra space makes more oxygen available (lessens chance of contam)

they were incubated at about 45-75 degrees
one night, the cardboard bucket was incubated at 80 degrees but then the incubator broke again, so it was just left in my room which has been pretty chilly, but its warming up...

stamets says

incubation: 70-80 degrees F

primordia formation and fruitbody development are the same.

but during fruitbody development he reccomends dropping humidity from 95-100% down to 90-95%

ive heard that too much humidity has caused contamination problems... I beleive lack of fresh air is more of a contamination issue, than relatively high humidity.

but they both play a roll... i've heard of people putting jars into sealed containers (without perlite) and not misting... (i would mist a litttttle bit. and exchange air more often)

 goodluck with the corn... Mycobags looked AWSOME and were some of the fastest i've seen grow !

are you going to be fruiting them from corn or using corn as spawn or both?

Very very cool. I've heard reishi is hard to grow but it looks like you got it down pat.

I think I am going to fruit them directly from the corn like mycobag did. I have soaked the corn in a 50/50 mixture water/coffee. I am curious how that will work out.

It takes at least 50 days for them to mature. Its so interesting watching these things start out as lil white nobs with water droplets popping out a few wholes. Then they start showing some brown. Then a lil more brown.and this is at about 20 some days from the pinning.
