Scary really isn't it how sneaky some people are. I imagine this 100% goes on certain forums, as mentioned the environmental groups/forums, i know the police in UK post undercover agents as environmentalists, so they see these people as a real threat...
I can imagine certain political forums, and anarcy groups are a big target as well...
What else? what other things do these scumbags try to subvert? Dark net forums maybe? anything that they want people to be misinformed about.
For some people everything is just a power game to be won, sad really.

Not sure this is what you mean but it seems highly impractical to basically employ people to troll forums. Subtle and strategic posting in order to manipulate a forum definitely happens, but at least on this forum I suspect that most if not all shroomerites who employ such tactics are free agents, not spying for an institution.
When it comes to institutions spying on forums, and the internet in general, I think that there would be computer analysis of bulk data looking for suspicious patterns, cracking/backdooring private computers to observe private communications, perhaps attempts to infiltrate/disrupt groups of activists.
There are plenty of buttholes and strong opinions, but there's really not any promotion of activist groups at the shroomery I know. Most of us are independent gentle people more interested in philosophizing and doing our activism in our own minds, not really a threat.
Police I think would definitely "spy" on a forum like this, but I expect this is fairly uncommon and they wouldn't need to be an active poster just to this sort of surveillance.

If "the powers that be" wanted to "control" us, the simplest and most effective way to do that would be to create a thread exactly like this one, and simply let it spread virally throughout the internet by ordinary, "concerned" citizens.
If such a thing were to happen, the name of the game would be Diviso et Impera; divide and conquer.
How do you divide a population that, if united, could topple you? You make all of them suspicious of one another.
As a population, we absolutely disagree about what's what. That is no secret.
But with one simple stroke, the conversation becomes about who's who, and not what's what, with people on one side of the fence yelling at the other, "SHILL CUCK!" and people on the other side yelling at people on the former, "HITLER NAZI!"
Soon enough, each side would be convinced that the genuine problem with society is the people on the other side of the fence.
In the "Age of Information", this process would simply be the newest version of Circus Maximus, keeping the population quietly sedated, while the problem laughs all the way to bank, which he owns.
