Some of the worse most unreliable bikes imo are pre evo harleys. Their 90 degree displacement and lack of rubber engine mounts would cause the engine to shake so much it would vibrate thing loose.
Now im a harley go so ill be first to say an evo or any big twin are awesome motors and harleys are some of the most customizable bikes. Very man outlets for aftermarket parts.
I started on a Honda and i like them too. If your looking for something smaller the inline 4 550 nighthawks are great bikes, extremely reliable and peppy for their size as well as they are dirt cheap.
As far as sport bikes, ducs are the shit but PRICEY honda cbr are great jixirs are good smaller size i think they are 750s... i could go on about bikes all day...

This would be about the most fun on two wheels possible I reckon (also without cracking triple figures) if only it weren't so damn unreliable:

ive owned several harley sportsters and a ninja 600.
would highly recommend any of them. The ninja was as close to 0 maintenance as you could get.

Reminds me of the Transalp I bought to see me through the salt this year:

It's pretty boring, but a surprisingly capable bike. Plus you just know it's gonna keep going forever.

Go Japanese. They are common, reliable, mechanics are everywhere, and lots of info out on them. Plus they are pretty much all the same until you have awesome skills, so you can pick the one that's the best price or looks the best. Something in the 400-650cc range in a standard (ninja, sv650, etc) would be best (though if you are under 180lbs, smaller bikes work better). Supermoto like bikes like the drz or grom are also excellent choices, if not better choices than standards. Avoid super sports like gsxr600 or 1000 (though, arguably, liter bikes are better beginner bikes than 600cc bikes when taking about super sports... But we're staying on a standard here, remember)
Secondly, take a MSF course to get your license. I don't care if you have a buddy who will teach you, take it anyhow.
Third, once you start getting comfortable, look up a track day group like sport bike track time and do a track day or two. You'll pick up valuable skills and learn a bunch more. Plus it's fun and if you keep doing track days it will help keep you from speeding on public roads.

My first bike I sold a couple years ago.
It was a Buell Blast lol, 02' I think.
It was kind of slow but it being my first bike, It was a lot of fun. I was ripping it around all the time until I had to sell it before I moved.
My buddy just sold his Suzuki DRZ400. That thing was cool.
I live in the mountains now, so I was thinking about getting an enduro type, on/off road for my next bike. Even though I really like the CBR's and R1's.

Id love to get a dual sport. I have this romanticized vision of jumping off road when a cop tries to light me up.
My only concern is a lot of the dual sport bikes seem really tall. I'm only 5'6 and prefer a shorter bike.

I have a TW as well. I've owed few motorcycles over the years, but the TW is my favorite. More fun/$ than almost anything else I've ever bought.
Plus, regardless of the model a little dual sport motorcycle is actually super practical. It is great for zipping around on back roads, and would also be great in an urban environment for getting around quickly. My TW gets 70-80 miles to the gallon and is super easy and cheap to maintain. Yea, you wouldn't think "practical" when you see a dual sport like this, but in reality they are a very cost effective and efficient type of transportation.

Nice! I was just looking at a TW online today, they are like the cheapest dual sports out there as far as price, the one i saw was only like 3.5k. Im thinking about getting one. But what about long trips? 2 plus hours? Is that feasible for the bike?

I'm not that familiar with that particular bike but being a 200cc mild mannered 4 stroke it will be pretty gutless and I doubt it will like doing highway speeds or long periods of time. That being said I'd imagine it is a pretty bulletproof engine that will run forever if it is anything like the TTR line.
What type of riding do you intend to do? $3500 opens up a lot of options if you are buy used.

I can't take more than an hour @ 60, too much vibration. Some people switch out the sprocket and take them cross-country though. They usually go for $2-3000 used.
