Yeah, a mountain bike with an engine would be badass.
Its basically like a mini Dirt Bike, but a lot less dangerous. One thing about actual dirt bikes i dont like, they are big and very heavy.

Bike would easily weigh 50lbs with a 4-stroke, but that's not too bad
They're slow, personally I would just use it for a boost going uphill or flat.
After a few near misses, never going top speed downhill, way too dangerous especially if you hit a switch back, just no time to brake or turn. No one wants to fly off a cliff
May well do this, depending how this summer goes. Will be going on foot for awhile at least, but later I'd like an off-road moped. Can easily sail in and out of town, then leave off into the wilderness, without being tied down to a larger vehicle.
Dirt bike would be great too, the street legality is shaky though. Lots of maintenance and like you said, a bit more dangerous.

I just built this last week. Took a day to sell it once complete. Paid 100 for the kit, 5 for the bike. Sold for 350. I have 2 more kits on the way. Definitely a fun little hobby if you're a little mechanically inclined.

People pay it. There's a guy in town that does the same thing and he sells them at 4 to 6 hundred. People really like motorized toys around here. Last year I was buying mini bikes fixing them up and reselling them for double to triple what I paid for them.

Maybe near the city I could convice people to pay that, but where I grew up (40 mins away), many people are weekend engineers and would know better in terms of how long it takes to install one of those motor kits. Think I installed one in just over 2 hours as a kid.

I love motorized bicycles. They are actually what lead me to "motorized foot scooters". I built a couple back in 2013. I rode them around for over a year without incident, mostly to work and back before a county sheriff pulled me over to tell me how illegal it is and give me $500 worth of tickets.

So I got smart and looked up the laws, and found that motorized bicycles have to be registered as a moped to be legal on the street, but "motorized foot scooters" are very vaguely regulated, and cannot be registered as a motor vehicle, and therefore do not require anything to legally operate, not even a license. So I built this death trap and went and ran circles around the police station.

This eventually led me to buying the scoot that I have now.

Got any close up pics of the foot scoot. I'd like to see how you mounted that engine. Very cool indeed.

Sure thing. This was definitely no professional job, but I made it work with what I had laying around, and I did zero welding. All held together using u-bolts, metal brackets, and other hardware. As you can see I bolted bicycle forks to the frame to create a "downtube" and then used the existing seatpost to mount the engine the same way one would on a bicycle. Then jammed a piece of 2x4 under the motor with a hammer and pry bar to keep everything solid. This scoot was actually surprisingly reliable for what it was.

Another option would be to register the moped. I know that's not always an option, depending on your circumstances.
Sometimes if you're under 50cc, you don't need to register, depends on the state. Similarly, depending on location, it would need to be a 4-stroke. Tying those 2 points together, the 4-strokes I've seen are usually under 50cc.

How did you do the chain drive?
I know the kits come with a 40 to 46 tooth sprocket, 415 heavy chain.
I might do a few projects using the 2 stroke bike kit after seeing those pics. Awesome dude!!!

I used the chain that came with the bike kit and it worked fine, but I found that any 1/8 bmx chain will also work on the drive sprocket, and be lighter. The chain pictured is a kmc k710. The rear wheel came from a zooma 33cc gas scooter. I drilled holes in a cassette cog from a bmx bike hub to match the wheels mounting pattern. The chain drive worked flawlessly.
