Big Gulp Tek: An exercise in micro bulk applications * 6
    #23054735 - 03/28/16 12:04 PM (7 years, 9 months ago)

SloppyJoe does BIG GULPS
An exercise in micro bulk applications

TL;DR Take azurs monotub principals, and apply them to a large soda cup on a small scale. Use your imagination.

I. Introduction and Inspiration:

Hey all- I've decided to do a write up based on my great experiences I've had with this method. People have been asking me a lot lately via :pm:, so I decided not to wait for my 4th round.. and maybe some people will be able to post some of their results by the time I post my next results. Micro bulk has been around for a long time, as a novelty application, or for stealth, or just for convenience. Whatever the reason, I think my Big Gulp method covers all the bases. I've had some pretty awesome results that have exceeded my expectations, and I think if people follow my instructions then there should be no reason they shouldn't either!

II. Leg work and Materials:

To successfully do any type of bulk, agar is more than a helpful tool. Culture work is the basis for every advanced growers beautiful end results. Without it, you are throwing caution to the wind and seeing what happens when it flies back at your face and blinds you.

Culture Work

Honestly the only link I need to provide is just this one. Any other links that you would know of mean that you understand the importance of agar and you can make your own decision on what tek would suit your needs best.
PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek- Pasty Plates (TM)

Grain/Jar Prep - YOU WILL NEED TO PC YOUR GRAINS, SO BUY A PC!!!! (Unless you make a few gulps out of a fully colonized cake. I haven't done this but you should try it out and share results if you are thinking about it!)
PC link- http://www.amazon.com/Mirro-Polished-Aluminum-Pressure-Cookware/dp/B000RNH7PQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459183071&sr=8-1&keywords=mirro+22+qt+pressure+cooker

Jar prep is pretty simple, no tek needed. I'll just tell you. If you buy a metal mason jar lid, drill a 1/4" hole in the top and stuff it with poly. Or if it's plastic, just leave the lid unscrewed a tiny bit so there is enough Gas Exchange. That's good enough. If you want other ideas just look up some tens. Not hard stuff people.

Grain Prep depending on your media, I use either WBS or oats so that's what I'll recommend.
Foo Man's WBS Method
Impossibly Easy Oats Prep Brought to you by Inoc
EatYA 45 minute Oat Prep

Inoculation

Munch's Blenderless LI

^Highly recommended
Tiger Drop 2.0 Tic Tac Toe

Sub prep

Just use coir for these. Maybe straw if you want to try, but in such a small vessel you want a reliable and contam resistant media. If you want to try something else, please feel free then post your results. I will not advocate anything besides coir though.

CVG
"A Coir Tek among a sea of endless coir teks"
Bucket Tek

Ok now that you have clean, healthy spawn after following all of my highly recommended teks....

Materials for FC

-Double Gulps (Big Gulps work but I like the double gulps, they are a bit taller incase your shrooms get big :yesnod:)
-Slurpee "dome lids"
-Polyfil
-1/4" drill bit
-Proper misting bottle
-Seperate clean bowl to mix your spawn and sub in.

III. How to make your Big Gulp

Ok so this is the design:

Here is how you make that happen (although I have to say, it's pretty self explanatory if you look at the picture.)

Step 1. Clean your cups. Actually not a necessary step at all but just make good practice, K?
Step 2. Drill 3 equidistant 1/4" holes for bottom holes. If You are using Double gulps, I drill mine right under a 711 logo, and then measure where the next ones will be from there. This gives me the perfect space underneath to make a nice deep sub in the cup.
Step 3. Clean out all the plastic.
Step 3 1/2. Not necessary. Soaking grains Frank style. I like to do this because it rehydrates the grains and adds a little extra moisture to the sub which is good for this tek.
Step 4. Now you are ready to mix your spawn with your prepped substrate. Do it in a bowl. a 1:1.5 spawn:sub ratio is utilized, anything less and you will have a hard time maintaining moisture in your substrate while it is fruiting. so 1 qt of fully colonized spawn into 1.5 qts of CVG. Use the last half of substrate as your casing layer later. This yields exactly 5 Big Gulps ( you can probably stretch to 6 if you start out 1:2 ratio)
Step 5. Pour the substrate evenly into big gulps. They should have about 3 inches of sub, or right up to the point of the cup where it gets wider for car holder purposes.  When thats done wipe all the excess from the sides.
Step 6. Take the extra CVG And put down a 1/4" passing layer onto of all of your cups. This casing layer will help even out your pinsets and help prevent side pinning down the line when it is ready to fruit.
Step 7. Now even out the surface, and plug up those bottom holes with poly stuffed decently like you would stuff a jar lid.
Step 8. Cap your Big Gulp with the dome lid, and put some medium-light poly stuffing in the big hole ontop.

There it is. Now find a spot on a shelf the gets some decent ambient light. They will start popping fruits 7-14 days after you spawn, depending on how well you got you field capacity and the conditions you keep it in and the strength of the culture. THIS IS NOT GOING TO NECESSARILY FRUIT FASTER THAN A MONO. Just be patient, and be happy you have a fresh new way to fruit mushrooms, this shit is fucking cool!

Spawn a bunch and give them to your friends as gifts, just tell them to make sure they keep it misted and they should have no problem getting a couple mushrooms themselves!

IV. Results

First round: 2 WBS 2 Oats uncased

Second Round: Oats uncased

Round 3: CASED oats

Round 4 MUTANT GULPS

R5 Albino Gulps

Well thanks for your interest. I'd like to formally thank the respected members of the community, TC or not, for all the help in getting me to this point. From someone who didn't know much a few months ago, now I am finally contributing to the community that has contributed so much to me already. Now, get that extra spawn jar out and make a round of Big Gulps with me! Let's get some testimonials out there!!

:buttchugging:

THANK YOU COME AGAIN

Pros

-Convenience.
-Stealth. This shit just looks like you went to 7/11 and forgot to throw out your cups. And then stuffed them with Poly... You get the point though.
-Cost. Big Gulps are free and you don't have to spend money on sterlites :super:
-You can do 5-6 Gulps with a single qt, so make an extra 1 in your batch to do a round of gulps along with your mono!
-Excellent Yield potential (Based on BE calculations, and compared to cake avgs)
-Ability to stretch small amounts of sub that otherwise have no purpose. (Left over from Masters, Fastest colonized jars, pints or half pints of grain you made as extra, etc)
-Can test isolates without allocating too many resources
-Good practice for beginners. Has really helped me understand how bulk substrate works and how it responds to certain environmental changes
-Harvesting is a piece of cake. Just pop out the sub and get in there with a knife, fastest easiest harvest you have with this hobby

Cons

- A lot of Big Gulps can accumulate making them take up more space than they are worth and can be difficult to maintain in a small space.
-It is difficult to produce second flushes. I have some contamination issues in my home, so I have not been able to produce any second flushes before they contaminate. Small sub = more of a chance contam can take hold. Others can have different experiences, though.
-Very hands on. Micro bulk will dry out faster than your grandmas cooch while stranded on a desert island if you let it. You have to be aware of your cups and make sure your field capacity is ON POINT. This is a Pro however if you are in learning stages, it can really help you understand your bulk process.

BE Calculations

100% BE is about 55 grams of wet cubes. so your yield (x) over 100% BE (55) x 100 = Your BE percentage.

20-39 grams - Average BE, about what you would expect from a very good cake
40-59 grams - Great BE, you are right on the money
60-89 grams - Excellent BE, you are doing something right
90+ grams - Fuckin A bro :super:

I haven't yet, but that is definitely on my list of things to do. Bottle tek will definitely get you a better yield per bottle, but i'd be interested in seeing the side by side results for amount of spawn/sub used and see which one holds up the best.

The thing with bottle tek is that you have extra steps involved making it a completely separate process than creating a mono tub. This is essentially the same process, but scaled way down. You can make a couple big gulps from your mono prep and probably not see any diminished returns on the tub, but still get some nice fruits in the Gulps. The idea is a sense of standardized "can't get easier than this" thinking when it comes to progressing the way we think about growing cubes.

You know Joe, I saw your signature in another post and thought that was a cool idea, thanks for making a tek, I was thinking the lid would be a rubber banded on piece of plastic wrap! Nope use the lid. Awesome idea! Thanks

I did this the first round. It was not ideal. Not only does it not provide very good FAE, but every time you have to mist, which during fruiting is once a day, you had to fiddle and play with the plastic. The lid was the solution that I can't take full credit for (thanks blu you crazy Aussie wherever you are)

Haha yep every tek needed a tek to make the tek. Tekception, it's how the shroomery innovates the field of amateur mycology

Yep good stuff sloppy. Small scale comes in handy for even the larger scale hobbiest. I plan to do nothing but small scale for the rest of 2016.

Maybe you could throw a 5th gen RW into a couple of Gulps? Some TC testimonials would really help with the validity of the tek

We will see. I'm taking the RW back to the 3rd gen right now, just did some swabs to agar a.few days ago. So maybe for posterity. But you don't need me to validate it, the concept is solid.
