No farm coops around here have it, checked the local (small) hardware store, and nothing. Where do you get it?

If you live near a rural area, go find a small town newspaper and check the classifieds. There are usually several farmers with straw to spare, and they sell it MUCH cheaper than over the web.

I bought almost exactly the same thing from Michael's craft shops for about $5 a mini-bale. (Canadian)
I'm more interested in where to find larger amounts than that.

Many places do not have straw, simply because straw does not grow there. I have been looking forever to get nice bales and finally managed to find some. The person is in Kansas and will ship single bales. $2 for a bale and about $23 for shipping and handling (It is a 40lbs bale). I have not yet been able to give it a try but if someone else wants the contact information feel free to message me.

well if you have an ACE hardware store they carry it (usually) Petsmart also carries timothy hay which works. No one calls it wheat straw though its just plain ole straw nothing fancy to it sure not worth 23 shipping. heck its only a dollar or 2 a bale

in the spring most garden supply stores carry it for people reseeding their yards. or in fall as a yuppi decoration. buy it seasonally and store the rest in a dry place, and make sure its totaly dry before storage.
or the fun way, steal it from some were, not like anyone would really care. i live in an area with lots of constuction (roads and buldings) theirs constantlly a truck load of straw somewere waiting for application on the fresh seeded ground.

A bale can be 5 dollars or more, it all depends on supply and demand. 25 bucks is definately not change from under the couch but for those that dont have any locally or even for those that only have small quantity locally, it really isn't all that bad of a deal. After all it is a 50lb bale (I'm pretty sure I said it wrong the first time). I mean it would be cheaper to just work with grain and you'd get more out of it however, grain gets quite a pain in the ass to work with. I guess it also depends on how much you really need.

straw can be pasturized and WBS cant thats the main advantige that I see for bulk substrate. Damn if I couls pasturize WBS that would be my bulk substrate for sure.
