quick casing question
    #2304747 - 02/05/04 02:04 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

ok i tried to ask this in the chat room to avoid making another post about casings, but the conversation quickly turned into an emo punk bashing so i will ask here instead.

i made 4 casings with 1 pint brf cased with straight verm, and 2 casings with 2 pints brf cased with straight verm.

heres my problem. this picture here shows one of the 2 pinters that is 4 days old. the myc is absolutly ripping up the casing, ive already patched twice...it will be birthed soon (dont worry im gonna put black tape around it, its clear now so i can see the colonizing happening.)

these two pictures are of one of my 1 pint casings. i realize they dont show much, but i just wanted them up for comparison.

ok problem time. the only casing that has done anything is one of the two pint casings. the others have been sitting in my double tub incubator for a week now, and have not colonized at all. i potentially sacrificed one of the casings for the team by digging down in it with a sterile spoon to see if the myc chunks had done anything at all, and they havnt. there just sitting in the verm doing nothing.

verm is fairly damp in all the casings. they are all at a perfect 85 degrees constantly. casing layer is a little under an inch.

why have 5 out of 6 of my casings done absolutly nothing, and what can i do to get them going?

i tried searching the forums, but of all the threads i found, none of them had any resolution to there problems.

any help is greatly appreciated.

I had this happen before and lost quite a few casings to it. My problem turend out I just wasn't incubating my casings. Once I set my incubator back up and had them inside, they all started back up. Maybe you aren't incubating warm enough? My room was in the 70's and the casings didn't do shit in that temp. I made sure I got to 85-90 and they fixed themselves basically

One photo shows a lid. This might be the problem, but can't tell from the pic.

You should have air holes in it or just use foil. I've killed some casings this way.

They need more air than they are getiing just from checking on them.

i was under the impression that C02 buildup was good for myclium growth. is this wrong?

the temperature in my incubator is definetly at a perfect 85 degrees.

right now i think i am going to wait untill sunday and if they still havent done anything, i am going to recase.

any good ideas on how to minimize the chance of me losing everything to contams when i recase?

No, c02 = bad. 02 = good.

You want some CO2 build-up during casing colonization and even pinning, hence no fanning... but a total lack of fresh air is never good for too long.  It's a sure way to kill healthy myc (contams and bacteria love the musty ambience of gladware)

Think about spawn bags with filter patches and you'll have your answer.

I don't see recasing as a contam risk, nor as a solution to your predicament.  Lose the lids, put some loose-fitting tin foil on 'em and see if they perk up.  If not, go ahead and put 'em in fruiting conditions anyway.  I've been skipping incubation completely for some time and getting comparable pinsets and yields in a shorter time.  You might wanna try this immediately with a couple, since you have 5 or 6 trays.  Make your own comparison, or at least try to learn something in the process.

There is the possibility that bacteria have set in and the damage is done.

In the name of all that is just and merciful: Give your babies some air, man.
