Casing with cactus mix
    #2303960 - 02/05/04 07:38 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I ran out of verm, so I plan on substituting cactus mix for a casing layer. It has verm and peat in, but I'm worried that the peat will go bad. I plan on nuking it for a few mins in the microwave, but I was also wondering if I could add a bit of bleach to the mix to kill bacteria and raise the PH so it is more basic. Only question is, how much bleach should I add, I know it would have to be a miniscule amount, but I have no idea how much.

Peat or Peat Moss (Is there a difference). Verm and Peat Moss is often used as casing material. Do not add bleach to raise ph and make more basic. Better situation is to sterilize by premixing verm and peat (50/50 will suffice) and adding in some limestone. Heat for 5 minutes on high in microwave, wait a while, heat again. Cover and let cool. Apply.

See FAQ for more details on correct lime. Can use calcium carbonate, regular limestone but advisable not to use hydrated lime.

i think cactus mix would actually work well. it's buffered to be slightly basic already i think. just sterilize it and give it a go.

Ah, I happen to have some cactus mix lying around... would it help to mix the cactus mix with verm (equal parts? 60/40?) or straight up?

Does anyone know if Schultz Cactus Mix has any fertelizer? Doesn't say anything on the bag. Also, if using cactus mix, is calcium carbonate or lime necessary? Should verm be added?

i think i've heard of someone trying it and failing. do not cut corners with your growing unless you are prepared for failure.
