If one were to colonize corrugated card board with P.sub, could you cover it with pine needles instead of woodchips as a fruiting substrate?

Not likely. Pine needles are high in tannins (natural fungicides) and are acidic, both of which will likely detour colonization.

I don't know, there is a post over at Nan's Nook about colonizing pine needles here.
There's no pictures, so I'm still not sure, but this guy says that he has some cubensis mycelium growing on pine needles.
Maybe if they're dried out, the tannins and other chems are reduced.

I would agree with Joshua. Although Ps. Subs seem to have a higher tolerance for oils and such, leading to a more diverse amount of substrates it can do well on compared to other woodlovers, it won't neccasarily perform its best on substrates with these higher toxins. Kinda like: you may have a high tolerance for alcohol but that doesn't mean you perform better on alcohol just that if you were drunk and were forced to perform, you would probably be better off than a lightweight, if that makes sence. Cardboard alone isn't all that great as a substrate (excellent for spawn) but trying to fruit these on a sub par substrate with the addition of this inhibitor on top probably won't give you the best results.

Would any kind of hardwood chips cut the mustard. How about shredded, hardwood mulch? What about log culture?

Any hardwood should work just fine and the chips or shredded should both be fine as long as the shredded isn't shredded too much like shavings or something, they like a solid base to fruit off. As for the logs, I know it could work but I've only seen one picture of cyanescens growing on a log, actually it was a branch growing off a dead tree which I believe someone had inoculated, I'm not sure why we haven't seen others, maybe it just isn't as efficient as far as yields go or just doesn't work as well and the one picture was a one time only success, I don't know.

Subs do fine with pine but the needle lack nutrition layer the cardboard on the bottom with sawdust and chip then a mix of chips sawdust and sbroken up sticks, then mulch with needles to keep in humidity That aproximates one of the the natural habitats - oh and they often fruit off pine cones directly
I have seen Sub fruiting directly off fallen logs - and big ones - actually fallen trees is more accurate as it was fruiting off a main trunk that had fallen across a creek

true- they will fruit off logs, but that is extremely rare. if you follow the above tek you'll be laughing in no time.

You are getting mixed advice.
What species are you referring to. I thought you meant Paneaolus subbalteatus. I think others think you are refering to Psilocybe subaeruginosa.
P. subb's are a dung/straw loving shrooom, while Ps. subaeruginosa is a woodlover.

P.subaeruginosa. Thanks for the input.
