No such thing as a hand...

This is a sort of sequel to my cookie analogy.
I contend that there is no such "thing" as a hand other than as a linguistic device. Some may ask me how that can be as everyone can readily point to it. I don't think so. Put a thousand doctors in an autopsy room and ask them to remove a hand. No two will remove it at the same point as there IS NO demarcation line between hand and non-hand other than some imaginary and arbitrary point. Once removed is it still a hand without blood? With no tendons connected to make it flex? With no nerve connection to control the flexing? No warmth? A hand separated from the body is NOT a hand at all.
How often to we confuse lingusitic devices with reality?

isn't that the starting point for abstract thought though?- separating that which is grouped..
The move from qualitative to quantitative belongs to the same idea..

When is it bed time in Neverland?
When the big hand touches the little hand.
(sorry, I thought this might be the appropriate time for this)

Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Flipped on the "news" and saw the Janet Jackson breast flap (now, now, people!). Apparently the critics don't know there is no such thing as a breast, either. "Well, you can show up to here, but displaying beyond this imaginary point is verboten and will collapse western civilization as we know it."

Hehe, I was working at a Home Depot through a temp service the other night. We were installing the fifteen foot high metal shelves that comprise the lawn and garden section. One of my coworkers only had one hand. He had a claw type thing that he could open and close by manipulating a cable that attatched to his shoulder. It seemed like he had mechanical advantage, because he only need one wrench when tightening bolts. Also, he only had one hand that got cold when working in freezing temperatures.

A bar patron asked the pirate, who was missing a hand and an eye, how he lost the hand. Pirate: "Arr, a shark bit me hand off." Patron: "Well what about the eye?" Pirate: "Got a speck in me eye and forgot about me new hook."

I've got to hand it to you... I am amused.
In most cases, linguistic devices are damn handy. On the other hand, I'm sure there are a handful of situations where linguistic devices don't exactly lend a helping hand.

"How often to we confuse lingusitic devices with reality?"
Every day, as it is often necessary for simple exchange of ideas and for cooperative and collaborative efforts
