I guessed that lol. I was just joking, but sure does look like a giant turd.
I want to grow shitake. They seem to be the most versatile edible for cooking.

They're awesome. They're delicious and they look beautiful. I think this block is too old to clone, but I got a culture from a fellow shroomerite that I just put on grain so I should have more shiitakes soon. I'll send you a wedge if you want. I'm fruiting this block inside a monotub. I just mist it a few times a day.

SGFC was great for my shiitake, they are pretty forgiving as long as you don't rush em.

Yeah. I'm planning on doing a lot more shiitake blocks now that I have a feel for them. Tomorrow I'm building a big coldframe for edibles outside. It's gonna be awesome. I'm going to hang Stamets style straw columns full of Wellington oyster from the ceiling joists, logs buried halfway in the sand in the middle, and waist high racks around the walls that can hold blocks or trays, because I plan to do shitloads of blazei and reishi in trays when it gets hot and everything else on sawdust blocks during the cooler months

I'll be shutting down for the summer but thanks for that offer. Come September I plan to go full tilt again.

Ok. couple easy questions then. Answer them if you wish. I consider this thread an extension of my personal experience so any info you can profide is very much appreciated.
monoculture or MS? RH of grow room? Temp of grow room? Spawn/bulk ratio? how many inches of substrate? How long did you wait before introducing fruiting? How long before pins were visible? How are you working the polyfil?(loose, extra loose, or stuffed tight, etc.) Fan on in the grow room?

Nice. I just started back up after a ~3 month break. I just quit a shitty job to pursue something where I use more of my talents, and I can make a lot of cash on the side selling edibles at the farmer's markets because nobody grows mushrooms out here. Seriously, the one farmer's market booth that sells mushrooms just has pearl oysters and they sell out in just a couple hours. I'll be focusing on Wellington oyster, elm oyster, lion's mane, pioppino, and shiitake during the cooler months and go full blast with reishi and blazei when it gets hot. I just need to grow some serious weight for the money to really matter, but I have an AA autoclave, a flowhood, and tomorrow I'll have a nice sized coldframe to fruit it all in. Oats and bales of straw are cheap, and I stocked up on oak pellets already.
I'm still gonna be growing some actives too -- I just started this OG Texas cube from a 7 year old print that I'm gonna rock all summer, and I've been growing a lot of stones, but edibles are definitely going to be my main focus from here on out.

I'm new to all this... And I believe I am good at it.
Are you saying I could make a career out of growing edibles simply from a stove top and an AA? I like working hard, and if this could be a real job I could get into that.

One of the better looking, quickly colonizing PE (1st transfer) plates. I'm super excited to be playing with agar my first time and isolating a strain! Any suggestions as far isolating a strain on agar?

Usually you'll find a good section from a clone in a few transfers but a MS or spore scraping could take 5 or so transfers.

A career? Probably not, but definitely a good amount of cash on the side. If you can grow enough mushrooms and then sell all of them, you can do quite well, like 200-300 bucks per weekend if you have a tight production schedule. People will shell out 20-40 bucks a pound all day for nice fresh mushrooms.
The most important part of growing serious weight is being able to produce a shitload of clean spawn. For that you'll either need a flowhood or a very nice SAB (MudaFuka's SAB holds its own against any flowhood). Once you can crank out shitloads of spawn, and set up a place to fruit everything, the intermediary step of preparing bulk substrate is easy. I use an outdoor burner and a giant water bath canner for pasteurizing straw and sawdust.
For some mushrooms you'll need to do supplemented substrates in bags, and this is where the flowhood comes in handy, but with oysters you can grow a shitload with minimal investment and if they're nice enough you'll sell every last one of them at the farmer's market.

I want to get there. Just ordered a mini greenhouse. Looking to move into a bigger place so I can dedicate an entire room.

Damn that's some time.. so theoretically if I took a wedge to some grain only a transfer or 2 in is it still technically considered ms?
