Natural habitat and man made habitats are two completely different ballgames. You almost never see clusters, or even more than a dozen fruits in one area in a natural habitat. More commonly it's one or two scattered around. In man made mulch, you could find hundreds in a couple square feet.
By far the best are woodchips laid down by crews after stream restoration projects. They will build a road through the woods to get to the stream, then at the end of the project put down massive amounts of woodchips where the temporary road was. There is usually plenty of colonized material that gets all mixed up in what they are doing, and there can be massive fruiting a year or two later. I've seen an area like that with 100,000+ ovoids fruiting.
Also they mulch the fuck out of local parks around here, and generally they make their own mulch from debris in the park itself. If there's a creek nearby, some of that debris is gonna have ovoid myc in it.

This has also been my experience with this mushroom (northern NJ)

Greater Seattle area outside a hotel / business complex. Still getting used to scissors in the dark. Thank god I have nails. Wish I left some of them. Patch was about the size of 5 parking spots. Plenty left =)

I've never found them in wood chips yet myself...I've spawned a bunch of stem butts in a 5 gallon bucket of wood chips ....looking for a place to start them.

Those are some increadable fruitings Dys. Funkmaster89, it's interesting to find the ovoids on corncobs. I want to try them on manure since they grow well through grass, and are most closely related to cubenis.
In my area, for the most part, everyone uses colored mulch. I hate it, and wish people could appreciate the color of natural wood chips. I'm hoping they do fruit on colored mulch on the east coast, like they do for folks on the west coast. I talked with someone who makes dyed mulch. He said it was the same dyes used for pet food. They double shred hardwood logs, and this is used for the black and brown mulch. For the red mulch, they use recycled pallets because they are heat dried and absorb the red dye better. I personally don't trust this dye, and certainly wouldn't trust old pallets to be free of toxins. If I do locate ovoids on dyed mulch, I will use them to start new beds. I can buy the mulch without dye for maybe $26 a yard, but he prefers to sell the dyed stuff because it is more profitable.

I'd take the dyed mulch any day over the shredded mulch they use in DC. It's hard to find a regular mulch bed in the city proper.
BTW.......in case no one guessed, they don't do very well in shredded mulch. It's not chunky enough.

That is good to know MacMerdin. I could also get single shredded mulch, it's much chunkier. Still, this is from logs, so not as nice as chipped branches. I have the number of a local tree guy that will give me a huge pile of wood chips that will probably be much more suitable. Gotta call him before the leaves come out.
I researched mulch a bit, and there is a change in the playground mulch sold in our area. It used to be chunky, but now is standerdised to a fine shred and is fluffy. Supposed to be a better cushion for the kids, but people complain about the sharp pieces that stick to clothes.

I found Wine caps and those agrocybes growing in the mulch beds at the Supreme Court. If those can grow in that mulch, so can ovoids.

Ovoids will for sure grow in the scotts brand mulch, i had bought 3 bags of an off-brand and none of my spawn seems to like it. stick to the scotts brand. the ovoid patch i found awhile ago is growing from red mulch but it's been there for years. recently scotts was the only brand selling dyed chips until it got popular
Most of the time the chips are too large and contam on me before they can grab onto the chips or give out halfway to contams. i have great luck with smaller plain chips. i get them from the camping section at walmart and all of my spawn is exploding onto the these.

I'm not so sure about that my friend. I've planted enough ovoid cakes around my area and you saw how well the wine caps were that day you and cannabinated came over.
Just saying.
Are we gonna hunt together at all this year? PM me.

Hey... I've got a question about hunting these in the wild. Okay so I live by the TN River and it flooded like crazy last year...it took a lil bit to recede about a week if I remember correctly but it did and im ready to HUNT!!! I went out the other day and didn't find nothing but a tick on me...
Now theres a creek that runs off the river and its got prime potential for Ovoids, its got the Japanese Knotweed and all.. So what im asking is did this flood fuck up my year or help it? Im thinking it shouldnt really affect the outcome, but ive only been hunting Ovoids for about 3 years now.
Thanks for any help guys! Peace~

Id look for thick mycelium growth where the ovoids would grow from, then keep a reminder to keep checking back. Sometimes a flood will wash everything away, sometimes it brings something new.
Just keep looking.
