pour after you sterilize, I usualy do the agar and empty plates in the same cycle allow the agar to cool until just before hardening and then pour, wrap and stack them and that'll reduce condensation

you drive a hard bargain...
denatured alcohol has been the best for removing it for the proce, it disolves agar pretty damned fast. it really wasnt a secret since several people had already asked.

You can wrap glass petri dishes in foil and sterilize in the oven @ 350 for half an hour. (empty of course)
However, glass petri dishes are a royal pain in the ass. They're too heavy to work with. I dropped so many and lost cultures, I finally got pissed and tossed them all out. Also, you can buy plastic pre-sterilized petri dishes for five cents each, and I doubt you can wash and sterilize a glass one for that. You can get a box of 500 petri dishes for $40 at www.cenmed.com RR

that is not a bad deal at all and i know what you mean about the clumsiness of Pyrex petri's. i donated all mine to OSU. i'm now using baby food jars. they are mush esier to handle, and i get them for free from the next door neighbor

yea i didnt think about that... it prob does cost more than .05 to clean and sterilize a glass petri dish... but then again its worth .05 not to have to sterilize it(thanx for the link).... and thanx for all the replies ppl!!

rr isnt talking about prepoured, only pre sterilized. if you want pre pored check a shroomery vendors or ebay. i recommend pouring your own or patsy's plates.

Yeah, prepoured is insanely expensive and not worth it unless you're buying shit tons for industrial use.
Buy plastic/glass petris and do your ow agar or do pasty plates. People say in the US all it takes to get the stuff for pasty plates is 1 trip to the grocer. Then you can make all the pre sterilised pre poured plates you want for a fraction of the price.

BLMP5 said: haven't seen any posts about where to buy prepoured pre sterilized petri dishes for cheap
One newbie to another...
I got a cheap sleeve from Amazon and the plastic bag packaging had holes in it so the sterility was really questionable. I had a bunch of contam problems with that batch. Now the contams could be from poor sterile procedure, I am new to it all, but when I saw those holes...
I didn't try to resterilize them at first but I have reused a couple of them already and I have had mixed results: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19886118
I got some glass petris from eBay [because disposable things make me a little nuts]. I would not recommend it [even with my mild mental disability about not throwing things away]. I have broken a number of them just putting plastic wrap on them and had to throw them away anyway. You have to be so careful with your thumb pressure.
Also, I tried the pasty plates with square mini Glads [these were the only ones at the first store I went to]... the lids don't snap-on tightly so stay away from those.
Finally, I got some mini rounds, did pasty's tek to the letter, and I am having much better luck with clean agar results. Stick to the tek.
Good luck!

Glass petris are awesome if you buy good quality ones. Mine break easy if you drop them but thick enough to take rough handling. There's a really expensive type of glass petris that don't even break when dropped, unless you get unlucky and they drop in the wierdest of ways.
Plastic petris on ebay suck especially if buying a sleeve at a time. I was buying them locally like that and I had the same problem, torn ssleeves and shitty sterility (I also suspect they were aseptic rather than sterile). After a while I got sick of that company and bought some from ebay, the results were worse. The only way I found to get sterile plastic plates is to find a good honest lab company locally and buy a whole box. Expensive for a hobby but boxes tend to have anywhere from 360-500 plates so they will last for a bit and you don't have to worry about torn sleeves because no one tampered with the box. Be careful when moving them also, they tend to cut the sleeve on their own with vibrations and movements.
Luckily this company I bought from last is legit, thick plastic sleeve, labelled QC sticker on each sleeve and it actually says how and where they were sterilised. On the expensive side of course but saves you a shitload of grief especially as a newbie because you don't expect a lab supply shop to sell you shit items, and you tend to blame yourself when shit hits the fan.
If you are going to buy loose sleeves from someone, press the sleeve gently and if it loses air, do not buy it. Buying by the box is worth it and I personally will never go back. I also would stay away from aseptic plates but this is just my preference, some people say they have good results with them.
