Psilocybe cyanescens outdoor Grow PNW * 35
    #23008066 - 03/15/16 12:00 AM (7 years, 10 months ago)

Got things going on agar, made several transfers to isolate healthy growth

Made several gallons of LC from potato water and Karo 4%, most of which will be cut with spring water and sprayed out of a super soaker directly onto fallen woody debris.

What LC I don't spray directly onto wet wood, I am using on a 90/10 mixture of sterilized WBS/maple and oak woodchips. here is a picture of some of the colonized jars. I have 6 gallons colonizing in the closet

Bought five yards of woodchips from a local nursery, 50/50 blend of sugar maple and oak. Started spreading them around the yard. I completely underestimated the amount of labor it is to move a dump truck load of woodchips, but will be ordering another 5 yards later this week.

I bought a chipper last week for fun, I'm thinking the cyan mycelium will love this mulch made of dried blackberry bush stocks and alder branches. On another note, this chipper preps manure like no other!

I will be mixing the colonized grain/woodchips with the bulk woodchips throughout the month of March and April, will post more pictures as it colonizes, then fruits this fall. Would love some feedback as this is a first time outdoor grow from grain

Thanks for doing this! I've been wanting to do some controlled tests with slurry vs chip bag spawn. I have an ovoid that I may slurry but have had doubts due to heavy rains.

I may be wrong but the slurry you speak of, is this the salt water brown sugar mushroom spore mixture they mentioned in "Mycelium Running"? I have yet to try it but have heard great things, I'm  goofing around with liquid cultures and grain. I'll make sure and section off a couple areas for you guys to see if the spots hit with only LC from the super soaker fruit like the spots hit with colonized grain.
master cyan LC, looks pretty healthy to me!

I meant grain slurry. Sticking some colonized grains in a blender and dumping the contents in the woodchips.

I did the molasses fresh sporing shroom slurry from ggmm with cyans a few years back. Had 8 gallons of the stuff. I backpack sprayed it at a park near here. Not sure it worked as I haven't even checked. It was done the same season though so I'm not sure if that means they didn't.

My My only concern with blending grain is exposing the internals of the seed that haven't had the chance to colonize yet. If you gave it a week after blending to completely colonize before spreading I feel your chances of success would increase, but only if your blender was completely sterile.
Spend a little time reading THIS thread it's right up our alley

Will they not wonder why dozens of mushrooms take over your beauty spot? seems a bit risky doing it on family property

Where do you think I got the original spores from? This property has always been loaded with tons of mushrooms, including cyans
This year will be the first year I am introducing new mycelium to the property, Shiitake and Oyster mushrooms I cloned from Albertsons over the winter  Equally excited about those.
Have you ever had a load of mulch or woodchips delivered that was already infected with mycelium? We were lucky enough to have a load of topsoil knocked up with Psilocybe stuntzii back in the 90's. Was plentiful, literally thousands of blue ringers everywhere for about 5 years every fall. My family members think mushrooms are neat, but could care less about looking though a book or browsing the net to see what species is what, that's always been my hobby

Yesterday I was able to get a bit more work done, worked on another "planting" bed. I was able to do it in layers, maybe 3-4.5 inches thick.

Thick branches, mainly alder and maple

Did a nice layer of finer chips, blackberry bush stocks and alder

now adding mixed chips, some thick some smaller, sugar maple and oak

Now adding millet seeds and pecan chips for extra nutrition

I leveled the mounds covering the colonized WBS/woodchips about 2 inches deep. It just looks like a normal planting bed now.

got another 5 yards of woodchips delivered

spread 2.5 gallons of Mycelium.

Cut 1/2 gallon of LC with 2 gallons of water and sprayed all over piles of wood debris and woodchips. I don't really know what to expect with the LC but I think it's worth a shot

Well, I feel like this is going to be a very good yield for my efforts come fall, but I could be wrong. Last cyan patch I made was minimal effort and I still ended up very happy.

Keep in mind, all of these planting beds were leveled out covering the colonized wbs/chips about 2-3 inches deep to protect it from drying out

Anyone else see the smiley face on the wbs grain below the woodchip?

I feel like I'm laying the colonized stuff down pretty thick

hope they love their new home

I thought about that, that's why I put around 10-15 % woodchips in with the WBS just in case it all gets eaten. So far It's not squirrels I'm having issues with, but birds. They don't even eat the colonized WBS, they just use their beaks and punch little cone shaped holes in the woodchips looking for worms and bugs exposing the mycelium.

I wouldn't add anything else in regards to nutrients to your spawn. It sounds risky adding that grain water as you're opening yourself up for potential contams, but I could be wrong. I would just let it do its thing and spawn handfuls of the colonized stuff to your favorite planting beds in a month or so.

I'm up to about 5 gallons of 90/10 colonized WBS/woodchips mixed with 10 yards of woodchips with the addition of several gallons of LC, I should be ok for this fall.
I'm learning a lot about rodents. I'm starting to think I should purposely get hundreds of birds and mice/squirrels to spread the love!

Getting the gardening beds ready for spring, spent the majority of my day composting with a new method(to me) called "Drunken composting" that uses: 1 can of beer, 1 can of soda, and 8 ounces of ammonia for the nitrogen source, which can be seen here. From what I'm seeing it only takes 7-9 days to break down into something usable. Kinda experimenting, My compost has a bunch of woodchips mixed in with it, over 30%, going to see how the cyans likes it in couple weeks.

The darker of the two compost piles has only been breaking down for 48 hours and it's already noticeable

I wanted to see how the cyan mycelium is doing where It was spread the thinnest, it seems to have grown about an inch thick which is a good start. I have the stuff about 2-3 inches deep to protect it from drying out, I hope that's not too deep to fruit this fall, I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Watered most of my patches, started covering them to protect them from drying out with this nice weather.

That's pretty much what I did here. spore > Agar > WBS/woodchips 90/10 ratio > woodchip beds. Yeah I'm not sure how hot it gets where you are but these cyans grow all the way down to the SF bay area which gets pretty hot. Dys is right though maybe start with your natives like the subs which grow all over the US then try a few baby patches of the other guys. I have seen seen azurescens grown in Wisconsin outside so I'm sure you could do it with the right micro climate.

My apartment complex just laid a bunch of alder chips yesterday. I would colonize that stuff too but I don't want them to find my 6'x6' patch under the rhododendron bush where I park. It's hilarious, my landlord just thinks I'm great. I'm the only renter that landscapes his yard and lays woodchips down for weed control

yep, they take to that scotts red mulch.
After i have my quarts of oats colonized i soak a bucket of
the mulch for a couple days then drain for about 1/2 a day.
Then i mix about 1 quart of spawn to about roughly 5-6 quarts of mulch.
I put it in a plastic bag and just roll up the top and put on a shelf.
a month or so later its ready for a new outside bed of red mulch.

I did this to this little bed last year and after it was done fuiting
i put about a inch of red mulch over it and we will see what happens this next season.

hey nothingschanged, thats pretty cool you recall my bay area  thread.
I'm trying to keep this small patch going and starting another one but a little larger.

Nice tek! Your myc looks very happy, do you worry about it being exposed soo soon in the season though?
