Great setup you have. What is flushing exactly? Is it something like removing the mushrooms off the cake to let more grow back?

Each time you harvest your mushrooms it's called a "flush"

RR Explains it here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5671862
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: A flush is a 'crop' of mushrooms. Mycelium tends to send up fruits in groups, then a brief resting period, then another flush occurs. Flush has nothing to do with picking.
quote: "Once you pick them, clear all the pins off the casing/cake with sterile hands. Dont worry about taking those pins off, if you have got a full flush those pins arnt going to go anywhere."
If you follow that incorrect advice, all you will do is ruin your project. Mycelium generally sets all the primordia/pins for the first three flushes at the time of the first flush. You'll notice that only about a third or so of the pins grow to maturity. There will be a few aborts that the heads turn black on, but the rest of the pins will be fine and just sitting there dormant. IF YOU PICK THOSE PINS, YOU RUIN YOUR SECOND AND THIRD FLUSH! Pick the mature fruits and any obvious aborts, but leave the rest.
Dunking is an excellent way to re-hydrate your substrate between flushes. You can dunk large trays or tubs by placing in the sink or bathtub and allowing the faucet to fill the tub so the water runs over the side and down the sink drain. Dunk your bulk projects like this for two or three hours maximum. It doesn't take overnight to dunk a bulk grow the way it does for tightly packed brf cakes. The running water will prevent bacteria buildup during the dunk. Cakes can be dunked right in the jar they grew in by filling it up with water and placing in the refrigerator overnight with the lid on the jar. RR

13shrooms said: I do this for every mono Im preparing.
First I take a (spores, agar wedges, LC, LI or slurries) and inoculate a qt jar of rye berries that I prepped using this method.
1 Qt Jar of grain for every spawn bag
1 grain spawn bag for every mono tub
*Note - All temperatures used in this procedure are room temps (72-77*F).
Then once the Qt(s) of grain is/are done colonizing I make a GLC like so
Quote:
agar said:
Pint jar on right is multispore inoculated (SA). Allowed to colonize near 100%. Syringe is 60 ML w/18 gauge needle. Quart jar on left is sterilized water.
Aspirated 60 ML sterile water into syringe.
Injected 60 ML sterile water into colonized grain jar.
Shook grain jar to liberate mycelium from grain.
Injected total of 180 ML sterile water into grain jar. (shaking mildly between each injection)
Aspirated out mycelium laden water from grain jar. (all I could aspirate out of the grain jar was 150 ML) Then, injected mycelium laden water back into sterile water jar. Approximately 500 ML of Mycelium laden water. (enough LC for approximately 50....10 ML syringes)
The advantage of this procedure is that you can be assured. The culture in clean. Because you can VISUALLY inspect colonization in the grain jar. (if there is FUNK, you can see it )
That is not the case, with sugar type LC's. (multispore syringe inoculated) They can be contaminated, from day 1. And, you NEVER know it. Until you inoculate spawn jars with that LC. Then, have every single spawn jar GO SOUTH.
* Agar for that write up*
Then once I have myc s ready I store them in my fridge for future use. (if Im stocked up on myc syringes I skip this step).
Then I let the rye grain jar re-colonize
and use the whole jar to G2G inoculate 1 large filter patch bag (for each monotub I want to make as I stated b4) in my glovebox/still air box and let that/them fully colonize.
Once the spawn bag(s) is/are finished colonizing I take my monotub(s) (prepped like Ohmatics mono tubs and using Damion5050s Coir tek) and dump all my pre-bucket pasteurized coir/verm substrate and my 1 fully colonized lrg grain spawn bag into my tub.
then (with gloved hands) mix it very well and level the substrate out to make the surface even/the same for fruiting. If the sub is uneven and has hills/valleys then you will have pockets of lower/higher humidity in random areas giving you a sparse or spotty pinset.
To prep my tub for colonization, I put the lid on (most lids dont seal tight so this is where I get my Gas Exchange from during colonization) and tape my tub holes shut w/duct tape until its fully colonized, usually 7-10 days.
Once 100% fully colonized (surface is all white and covered in myc) I remove the duct tape from the FAE holes and stuff them with polyfill and put into fruiting conditions.
Then I try to keep a constant rotation going.
And yes I have a ghetto light set up but each tub is getting its own cfl (6500k spectrum/color) lamp using the 12/12 circadian rhythm light cycle.
I dont mist or fan (unless the substrate looks dry) during the 1st flush, I dont mess with any of my tubs until its time to harvest 1st flush
Then after all the harvesting is done, I dunk my tub(s) 1 at a time in my bathtub (or whatever you got), I put something kinda heavy (but not too heavy to damage the sub) on top of the substrate to hold it down under water in my mono in my tub.
4hrs go by and I carefully tip the tub on end (while using my gloved fingertips to hold the sub in the tub) and drain the excess water out.
or use this monotub dunking tek by total
Then I case the substrate using "jiffy mix - seed starter" or 50/50+ casing material.
2qts of field capacity casing is enough mix to cover the surface of 1 mono in about a 1/4" of casing material.
Then immediately back into fruiting.
I mist/fan 2x a day if needed until the 2nd flush is in.
I dont go past 2nd flush (because around 85-90% of your total fruits will come in the 1st 2 flushes unless you have other issues) to make room for the next cycle of tubs.
Feel free to see how many flushes you can do, I just dont worry about the fruits that could be my 3rd flush etc... because I toss all my spent substrates into a pile in my yard and it produces some nice treats every now and then throughout the warmer months of the year.
Enjoy!
