That is really mind boggling that you can't find anywhere in your town to buy perlite. Perlite is fairly common even in a small hick town like you say you live in. I had family that lived in a small town (about 1000 people) and they sold perlite at the grocery store year round. I would check that out first before trying any new ideas. I know towels will act as a breading ground for bacteria, which could lead to some really bad things. I would highly recommend trying to find some perlite in your town, I am almost sure someone somewhere sells it. If not maybe a surrounding town. But I would not recommend using towels.

StainBlue is right, Towels won't hold the water as well as perlite and will just promote contaminants. Ever smelled wet laundry that didn't get dried for a couple days??? If you are in a "hick" town, check your local Co-op or feed mill. They will have it.

Take Care

if anything use vermiculite...towels might work if you sterilize them properly and add H202...but I doubt it would work as well as perlite...perlite slowly lets water out you know...

F perlite. It's messy and you gotta keep buying it. Get a cool mist humidifier and your set for life. It even takes care of your fresh air exchanges. Cant go wrong.

Just pick up some Perlite online, at Myco Supply or Dr. BlueThumb.
Perlite isn't messy if you put it in a cool whip container or something and then throw it in the terranium.

Correct, but you still have to fan every day to get rid of the co2. Why not just have a cool mist going in there with a small hole cut in the bottom of the terrarium for co2 escape? Nothing to do except keep the humidifier full and pick shrooms.

I use wet PAPER towels - works just fine. Will post some pics soon.
I took some toilet paper and moistened it with tap water - it actually turned into a wet paper mass. Then spreaed it evenly atthe bottom of my terrarium and covered with wet paper towels (you know, these wide kitchen towels?)

Works perfect. No smell, 100% humidity, my GT and EQ just love it. Don't even have to mist the terrarium. One tip: to avoid bacteria growth, i change the towels after every flush and use water + H2O2.

Another idea i would like to try soon - use clay granules for cat's toilet (like Catsan or Thomas). Must be another alternative to perlite.

Yeah cool mists are great. no more fanning, and air exchange included. The only problem with them is that they DON'T last forever, so you'll definetly have to buy a new one every few years. But if you're serious about growing, then def get one.

Is there not even an ACE hardware in your small town? I'm sure there is a flower shop or landscaping business you could call and ask, good luck! use perlite! it's working for my first grow

I just mean like, does it pop up in the similar threads down below, or in the search engine?  I only ever see these when they get bumped.  It's like a time machine...
