Mushroom spores are everywhere. You typically inhale a few hundred with every breath. When they land in a spot suitable for growth, they germinate forming a mycelium that looks like mold. To be able to form mushrooms, 2 compatible mycelia must come into contact with each other. When conditions in the habitat become right, the mycelium will form mushrooms. The mushrooms are the fruiting bodies, exactly similar to apples on an apple tree.

The time when conditions are right for mushroom fruiting depends on the area and species of mushroom. Prime mushroom hunting months also depend on the area. The easiest way to find out for your area is to contact a local mycological society. They will also generally be happy to help you identify anything you find, although I'd be reluctant to bring your suspected actives to a meeting.
