Question regarding shaking of jars during incubation stage..
    #2298687 - 02/03/04 09:09 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

At this point, my 6 jars are being held in my 2-bin incubator with the water temp right at around 82F.  They have been in since Sat. afternoon, so roughly about 3 days now and I haven't seen any growth yet, nor do I really expect it this early.

My question is this, I've read on here that some people like to shake the jars to increase the colonization rate during incubation.  Is this a wise thing to do, and if so how often and how vigorous would you shake them??  Furthermore, would opening the cover of the incubation bin and handling the jars in that manner increase risk of contamination??  Let me know if it's worth it or not...thanks!!

Best I've figured:
1)Just after you take jars out of PC
2)After inoculation
3)Colonization is visible @ around 5-10% of jar surface
4)Colonization is visible @ around 50% of jar surface

Don't know if it is worth it or not yet.
In the process of finding out.
Good Luck

when i did wbs quart jars, i saw growth in 3 of 6 jars in less than three days (about 55-60 hours). I had mine in an incubator too, around 83 - 88 F. Im sure that you have some small growth, but it is in the middle of the grain. If you have a filter, its hard to get contams...dont worry; spray lysol before you get them out.

remember, patience is key.
