Vermiculite with WBS??

question.... a friend of mine is using the wild bird seed bulk spawn technique, but has no ty vek material. they were wondering if they could use vermiculite or perlite, like with the pf cake method. or maybe there is some sort of material lying around theyre house that they could use instead.

Also.... they were wondering if canning jars are the only kind of jars they could use. they have other kinds...and in reference to the lip being bigger or the same size as the rest of the jar....if they are planning on casing...would it matter???

they millet is already soaked.....the preassure cooker is ready to go....all they need is your wisdom.

For filter material, you can use poly-fil as Mr. Carter pointed out (wallyworld) ,or as fee said, tyvek (post office). IMHO tyvek is the choice.

As far as the jars go, you can use any jar as long as it can withstand the PC and you can get the spawn out of the jar.

I use half gallon canning jars with widemouths....i have to crumble and crush the cake to get it out. Use gloves, wash hands and forearms throughly, you'll be fine.

i have a white envelope thingy here with bubbles in it.....my friend said it was ty vek. if this is ty vek (cause i really have no idea) should i tell my friend to remove the bubbles somehow before they cuts filters with it? also, could ty vek be the thin styrofoamy stuff?

I've never seen it with any bubble crap. Go to Office Deepho and ask for some of them there tyvek envelopes. They be knowing what you talking about.
