 2nd Grader's 'Special Medicine' Story Leads to Pot Bust

A second-grader's story about helping a farmer grow "special medicine" plants led to the bust of an indoor marijuana growing operation in Vermont, authorities said.
According to an affidavit, an 8-year-old boy told school officials and Windsor police detective Jennifer Frank that he helped his mother's boyfriend, 54-year-old Steven Mann, grow "special medicine that can cure anything at all," The Times-Argus reports.
Police said they found 50 marijuana plants worth $75,000, along with two "grow rooms" next to the child's bedroom and other drug-related items.
Mann and his girlfriend, 25-year-old Leona Hunt, were each charged with marijuana cultivation, possession of a hallucinogenic drug, possession of a depressant or stimulant and cruelty to a child.
Mann pleaded not guilty this week in a White River Junction court to a felony count of cultivating more than 25 marijuana plants.
Frank said the boy had described what sounded like marijuana plants and told her that people came to the house frequently. Police said shutting down the growing operation "will have a significant effect on the illegal sales of marijuana in Windsor County."
The Department of Children and Families took custody of the child.
Information on attorneys for Hunt and Mann were not immediately available. A woman who answered a phone listing for a Steven Mann in Windsor County said it was the wrong number.

He was using cfls? Im suprised with two big grow rooms that he would use cfls... I've grown with them In the past, they work great! They just have a bad reputation. I also thought vermont just legalized recreational marijuana. That's shitty they take away ur kids for growing herb.... Rediculous!!

I feel bad for the kid mostly.
I bet most of that was for them. It didn't look like they were gonna get a whole lot from them.
And as long as the child never smoked any why give the parents a child endangerment charge? Because his parents showed him how to garden?

They shouldn't be locked away over this kind of shit, but they also should be a little smarter in regards to the child. Kids talk, so don't give them anything to talk about. Telling your kids that the plants you're growing are a "special medicine that can cure anything at all" is kind of setting yourself up.

I'm not saying it's right, but if you know what you're doing is illegal then you should probably take extra precautions. These kind of headlines just give the prohibition warriors more reason to scare the public into continuing our current drug policies.
If we really want to see drug laws change, then drug culture needs to demonstrate that it can be responsible.

It is going to cost the system thousands of dollars in court time and man hours ....just to deal with some dingy lousy plants.
Those plants quite frankly look pathetic. 
And unless they are fully budding, are not worth fuck all!!
I see no buds.
Total worth of plants in photo ...ZERO....
Total waste of time.

IMO it's just not responsible to have children around a grow op like that. Someone could break in and steal the plants, rob the place. Not saying they're terrible parents and I don't think they should be charged with cruelty to a child, but definitely not the most responsible thing in the world.
Don't grow in the family home...

Where do you draw the line on that?
What about parents that grow a lot of house plants in the home?
What about people who have green houses attached to their homes and grow food?
Why the fuck would you put restrictions on a damn plant to begin with.
Hasn't the fucking Law done enough damage and ruined hundreds of thousands of lives....
My advice, try and break away from the TIT of government and understand that if this plant was not illegal to grow, then everyone would grow it, and no one would bother to run around and steal it.
How often does someone break into your house to steal your fucking potatoes
I know a woman that has a wonderful house with a southern exposure and built an indoor greenhouse attached to her house. She grows food in there all year round, including potatoes. 
Should she lose her children too?
In that green house she also has some grow lights too.

If they lived in Colorado then this would be a different story. Hell it wouldn't even be a story, but they don't live in Colorado.
Again, I don't think these people should be in any trouble over the marijuana, but if you know that it is illegal in your area you should take more precautions.
Having kids around this kind of stuff is just asking for trouble.
