under pressure
    #2292043 - 02/01/04 05:42 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

'Sup folk,

well, i'm finally gonna build my new positive pressure box. I just have few questions, to make sure i get it right, as it'll take a while and be a pisser if i bugger it up. My plan is to build a perspex box about 75cm wide, 40 cm high and 40 cm deep, (about 30" by 15" by 15") sealed together with plastic sealant and built on a painted wooden frame to make construction easier, with a domestic hepa unit blowing in filtered air, a hinged lid and two arm holes. Here are my questions;

1. Will a domestic hepa unit (a bionaire BAP 541) provide enough pressure? I don't know it's exact airflow, but it seems pretty powerful (the air stream extends about six feet). It's got a new filter, and its about 99.7%. Good enough to forgoe the use of gloves? The box will be about 0.2 cubic meters in volume (about 7 cubic feet)

2. Will the (painted) wooden frame be a harbour for contams? I plan to use a waterproof kitchen style paint.

3. How far apart would you reccomend putting the arm holes on a 75cm (30") wide front?

4. Does this box seem big enough for standard mycological work (g2g transfers into mycobags, syringe making etc)

sorry if this post is a bit overkill, but i really wanna get this right

Cheers everyone,

-Odium

arm holes [Re: OJK]

I put a big slot in mine instead of armholes... starting very close to the bottom, the hole was about twice the thickness of my forearm at the elbow, and as wide as my body plus both my arms... lots of freedom of movement that way... I taped a garbage bag over the slot to hang down where my arms arent... works real nice, and the flapping garbage bag always indicates when positive pressure is present.

Thanks for that link anno - I just realised how much more sense it would make to use wood for the sides and the bottom, and mike, a slot is a great idea. Cheers guys

Sup,

After checking out Anno's link, I decided that it would be easier for me to duct in the hepa air stream, rather than build in the unit to the clean box. In anno's box, I noted the second wood section with the grill to spread the filtered air throughout the box; I was just wondering how essential this is?

Cheers all,

-Odium

Well, some spreading is definitely good, how you achieve this is a matter of preference, I at that time just felt like drilling 500 holes :wink:
