Cosmetic Surgery and God's Perfection
    #2291413 - 02/01/04 11:21 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Let's all dye our hair, get our teeth straightened and capped, some rhinoplasty, a boob job, a little liposuction, some hair transplants and get that pesky appendix removed.

But wait! Isn't God perfect and aren't we all made in his image? Or are these imperfections that we seek to "correct" merely a result of "natural selection" and not some divine artist?

Shouldn't only atheists and agnostics be doing these procedures? Is it not blasphemy for the truly religious to dabble on the human canvas?

Have you ever written a poem or a piece music and gone back and changed it? Cosmetic surgeons are God's artisans doing touch up work.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Yes I have, but not a perfect piece of work.

The picture you paint of the "truly religious" is a fine one...

I don't think you can group all "truly religious" people into the "we were created perfect, in the image of God who is perfect" category.

There are many different forms of religion, Swami

You're here because you know something.
What you know you can't explain,
But you feel it;
You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

'Perfect' is really a human concept as far as I can tell. Maybe God believes in continuous quality improvement and it keeps him from getting bored.

I could be more politically correct in every post and put in a thousand word disclaimer which still wouldn't be enough.

How about this: How do those who are religious and believe in God's perfection justify cosmetic surgery and bodily alteration?

I was always partial to,

"NO!  Drugs are bad, in the bible it says treat your body as a temple!" as they bite into a big mac.

To you, is there a difference between medical procedures that have health purposes and medical procedures that are purely cosmetic?  Because I look down on things like liposuction and hair restoration, but I thing braces are okay.

I think the point here is not all people who claim to be christian truly are, and those that truly are may do things that you don't understand.

Every temple needs some incense to make the experience a little more mystical and beautiful.
Peace.

God made us in His image and likeness, and we are perfect. But first, we have to define "image".

God is a spirit, or an energy. We are made of the same material of which He is made. For various reasons, we are born into imperfect, physical, human bodies. So we take vitamins, we excercise, etc.

But we also enhance our bodies. Pierced ears, pierced noses and eyebrows, tattoos, boob jobs, etc.

There is nothing wrong with what we do to our bodies as long as we aren't doing anything to hurt ourselves or others.

--------------------
The day will come when, after harnessing the ether, the winds, the tides, gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And, on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.  -Teilard
