316L Autoclave or Cast Iron Pressure Cooker
    #22878790 - 02/08/16 12:14 PM (8 years, 9 days ago)

Hard to find new Cast Iron Pressure Cookers for use with Caustic Soda. Aluminum pressure cookers are a no go, but most Autoclaves are Stainless Steel. Anyone Have Experience using them with Lye?

Better yet, if you have one to sell new/used, and have personally tested it with caustic soda, at 250F+ then will buy from you at 500usd for cast iron or 1k usd for all stainless.

This would say its not suitable at temps a PC would run at

what are you doing exactly? can you not put the caustic soda within another suitable container in a PC with water in it?

Thanks, your double walled solution will work but will require a bit of welding work. Although seems wise to replace the smaller cast iron after x uses just like graphite crucibles instead of the stainless.

What are you doing with lye in a pressure cooker?

Earlier today I read that lye is very corrosive to SS at boiling temperatures, so that's not a good idea.  I would guess similar for cast iron but not sure.

I was thinking of plastic or maybe glass containers.

If you gave more info you might get more help.
