Cold Shocking? Too Cold?
    #2288791 - 01/31/04 03:02 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Recently the temperature has dipped pretty low around here.  Minux 7-10 celcius at times.  I know for a fact two of my casings froze one night, and all my jars did too.  The mycellium seems to be coming back to life and the mushrooms are growing again on my casings.  Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

One casing was pinning when it froze and the pins froze, upon thawing up they kept on growing.  The other casing was inbetween flushes and a day later it was pinning too.

I half expected that sort of temperature to completely kill them.  Oh well!  Glad it didn't

I know for a fact that colonized jars do survive a freeze.
And usually pin pretty much directly after that..i wouldnt recomend freezing it for too long though..then it probably die on you.

peace..

Yeah I didn't want it to freeze. It was just a horrible horrible coincidence!

They only froze for a day.

I think that mycellium can survive the freesing cold, it just slows growth allot. Isnt this why a patch comes back year after year? Or it it from the spores?

Heat can kill though 110F kills all growth.

Mycelium suvives freezing in the wild for a couple reasons.  For one, the ground/earth(or stump, or wood chip bed) acts as sort of a "heat buffer/insulator" and helps protect against large fluctuations in ambient temperature.  Second, the biochemical processes going on in the mycelial cells generate tiny amounts of heat, even in the dead of winter.  This is enough heat, at least on a microscale, to prevent the mycelial cells from freezing solid and dying.

Most recurrent mushroom patches aren't the result of new mycelial growth from last year's spore production.  The "mother" mycelial mass over-winters for many species, and produces fruit bodies year after year when the climate is just right.

Thats what i thought. The spores are more for propagation, not living through winter. Another reason is only the top layer of soil fully freezes.
