qld is gold , but yeah it has been fairly dry over the christmas period this last week has really made them quite rampant popping out of everywhere , cubes are quite hardy when it comes to torrential rain as you can see haha

Hi all,
Had heaps of rain on the gc last week, stopped about 3 days ago. My question is hois how long will gold tops keep popping up after its stopped raining? I got to some fields today but they were pretty dry already, found some old shrooms but not worth keeping.
P.s. sorry I'm such a noob, if I should start a new thread feel free to let me know, long time reader, first time poster

Hey all,

long time reader of shroomery and new to hunting. Just moved to Brisbane around 4months ago. Scouting out some spots to the south this weekend for future references.

edit: just realized I am breaking forum rules. Will wait out till I get access to relevant section to meet people.

SE Qld Shroom Hunters Are Lucky [Re: The Patient]
    #24827094 - 12/05/17 01:59 AM (6 years, 4 months ago)

Not sure if anyone will read this since the last post was so long ago, but it seems like an old thread that people keep coming back to so I thought I'd post.

Does anyone consider themselves lucky, as shroom hunters, to live in SE Qld?

I've had a 100% success rate lately, and if there's been enough rain, sometimes I find so many (Pan Cyans) that I get bored of picking. I didn't think it would really be as simple as waiting for enough rain, going to a cow field, and finding Pan Cyans or Cubes, every time.

In the past I'd only taken shrooms given to me by friends, but when SE Qld had that crazy torrential rain for over a week straight in October, I thought there couldn't be a better time to hunt for mushrooms. I didn't want to go searching for random cow fields, even if I only had to travel for 15 or 20 mins, so I picked a spot, my grandpa's farm near Woodford, about a 45 min drive.

The first time I went, I was looking for Cubes, so when I found Pan Cyans I thought they weren't magic, but when they started bruising blue and I Googled them, I was really happy, and ended up finding hundreds. I went back a few days later after more rain and found a couple of hundred more.

I've been back probably 8-10 times in the last couple of months. I check the rain radar over the spot when there's rain forecast, and if there's been at least a few days with rain over the spot, I'll go hunting in the morning a day or two later. I have two hunting fields, one is on my grandpa's farm, but the spot where I find the bulk of the Pan Cyans is his neighbours farm, so I make sure to go just before sunrise, and search the neighbours farm in the early twilight when they're fast asleep.

We had lots of rain the past week, and when I went back last week I found 300-something Pan Cyans, 425g fresh, and 80g of Cubes. I found so many Pan Cyans that I was getting bored, every cow poo for 100m had a few growing out of them. I went back three mornings later (after more rain) and found another few hundred Pan Cyans, as well as 23 Cubes, or 450g.

I can't help but think that maybe we're lucky here in SE Qld, because I find them every time, and usually more than I expect. However, maybe it's like this all around the world, or at least everywhere that magic mushies are known to grow? Is it really as simple as waiting for a few days of rain over cow fields, going to the cow fields, and 100% finding magic mushrooms, or are we just quite lucky with the kind of climate we have here? Or is it maybe just a matter of getting lucky with finding a good fertile growing spot? I've driven past lots of cow fields on the way to my spot, and never see any mushrooms from my car.

This is a 2L bucket that was packed densely with Pan Cyans. This was last Friday, I thought I was silly at first for taking such a big container.

This is them out of the bucket, I counted 300 but I know some slipped through uncounted.

These are the Cubes I found a few days later, on Monday, along with a whole bunch more Pan Cyans that I either missed or had shot up since.

It's been very wet, some fields have them and some don't. It's good weather for them this year but not all locations may have been exposed to spores. I haven't had much of a look around yet though, I've only checked a reliable cube spot. There is a place I have found cyans previously though not in the last couple of years. I'm hoping them may return this year.

Lucky you my brother! I went hunting a few times around SEQ and never found anything, even after big storms.

Enjoy my man!

I have noticed that the consistency of the cow pies makes alot of difference.  Fields with flat runny cow pies do not produce like fields with nice thick cow pies. Flat poo is heavy in nitrogen, giving cows a diarrhea like poo vs a low nitrogen containing feed. It's how farmers in my area keep the active mushroom population low to nonexistent in their pastures.

Any luck this year. Im from around central QLD and have had no luck. Also some fields have a pest grass so unsure what the council/land owner would use to combat this. Any ideas?

Would you chance eating any from these fields or just steer clear?

^ Well my picking field is my uncles near Woodford, and I know he doesn't use a "pest grass".

I've been hunting the last few weeks but haven't found any shrooms yet this year, not even non-magic types. However, by the 18th of October (a week ago) last year, I was picking loads of Pan Cyans. Last year there was about a week and a half of torrential rain mid-October, and the season seemed to start right after that.

This year, there's definitely been a lot of rain around, everything's quite green, but nowhere near the same amount as last year. Nothing has started growing yet. I know it's only been an extra week. Has anyone had any experience in fluctuations between when the season starts in the same spot? Any idea what the main factors are?

This is my first year hunting but I've lucked out on all my recent hunts too. From what I've read though there are heaps of reasons you might not be finding any. Ive seen a few posts where users describe having their regular field that is usually booming barely produce anything one year, and likewise a field that didn't produce anything the previous year suddenly explodes with shrooms. Apparently cube growth is fastest when humidity is consistently 65-70% or higher, below that it really slows down. Apparently there is also more growth when there is frequent days of cloud cover, drizzle and minimal wind as opposed to a few days of torrential rain. And while the QLD season technically starts around September, it predominantly kicks off starting November. Take everything I've said with a grain of salt though, I haven't technically found any magic yet I'm just reciting what I've read on here.

The orange domed species grew on wooden sleeper and the brown caps have silky shiny stems and grew where a cow manure was. Around the yard there’s a Mix of chicken and cow manure

It's a mixed collection,  Psathyrella species and I think the other one is a Gerronema species but I'm still trying to figure it out.

Thanks for the reply I’ll look at your suggestions. A mate found some bioluminescent species in a Forrest a few hours north. I was under the impression they didn’t grow in Australia.  Is that unusual? I can get pics, they looked like an oyster mushroom. Don’t worry I wouldn’t eat it.

There are a few different Genus of bioluminescent fungi so it's possible for one to be in your country.
