I read the contamination faq, but what I was wondering is if bacillus stays dormant for long. AFOAF had all of his cakes attacked by bacillus and was wondering who/what the culprit was. They were all attacked at about the same time (3 weeks after innoc) but it was when the 1/2 pint jars were anywhere from 75% to 100% colonized. Could it have been the incubator or will bacillus stay dormant for this long in primo incubating conditions?

Also, best way to rid a PMP of bacillus? I'm using lava rock...

bacillus doesnt necisarily stay dormant, it generaly comes from excess moisture in your grains...one way to tell if tere may be a problem is to look for a greasy apearance around grains touching glass. Generaly bacillus and mycelium will not grow well together.

to clean the lavarocks use a 4% bleach solution and soak overnight, drain and refil with fresf water a couple of times, allow to air dry (sun works well) and then PC to sterilize and kill any remaining contaminants

I wonder what he had then... Once the pf jars were fully colonized they appeared to have a bluish tint to the myc. He was sure it was bruising so he continued to birth but said he couldn't get past the strong sour-like odor, definitely not not the pleasant mushy odor. This is why he figured it was bacillus. Eventually all of his jars were attacked by this monstrosity...

Microorganism need to satisfy certain parameters for germination and growth. That's why cubensis need a specific range of temperature, Rh and other factors to germinate and/or grow.
The same thing happens with bacillus, so yes it probably germinated when all needed germination parameters were met.

Thanks all. My friend's pf cakes are toast but he just wanted to know where the problem was. He wants to get a pc but can't afford it at the moment.

I believe not using a pc is where it started. Usually if you boil to sterlize, water can slip into jars causing the grains to get overly wet and lead to bacillus.
