Now we need one that actually detects shrooms.

I just go in landscape/building clothing and say I am quoting/working on a job in the area shortly and come to take pictures of the location.. That is if I ever come across people in public.. Other than that I haven't come across people being a problem, apart from a security guard that one time hahaha

i've been relic hunting and coin shooting for 25 plus years and it never fails to attract attention--usually from the most obnoxious type of human inhabiting the earth--when i do it in public places.
--"what are you looking for?" --"do you have permission to do that here?" while i'm in a public place with as much right to be there as the questioner. --"you know you can go to jail for detecting in this park/on this land?" --"you won't find anything here. my brother/cousin/uncle detected this place 30 years ago" --"i bet you find a bunch of junk with that thing. hahahaha" --"my mom's cousin's aunt lost a gold ring over there by that building 20 years ago. i heard it had a 25 carat flawless diamond in it worth 100 meelion dollars" --"mind if my son sits here and watches you?" (while i go play on facebook on my phone instead of spending time with my son that i only see every other weekend) --"that seems like a waste of time. do you ever find anything besides trash?" --"my brother had one of those things 30 years ago. all he ever found was trash"
etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam.

I've been detecting for about 10 years. I've had a chuckle at what you wrote...things are the same all over, I guess. You forgot the dude who thinks he's hilarious by throwing pennies on the ground in front of you, or the kid who stands right in front of you and won't move.

ha, glad you got a chuckle out of that. yeah it seems there are so many of those people all across the land.
and the kid who stands in front of you while obstructing your path has on kiddie boots that have metal eyelets for the laces, causing the machine to ping every time you swing past his feet. ugh.

Have you guys seen the show Detectorists?
if not, check it out, it's really good. I don't have a detector but while watching it my girlfriend drew many, many comparisons about me with this and mushroom hunting.

yeah, i've heard of it and seen a few episodes.
my wife knows that my love of primitive hunting, relic/metal hunting, gem/crystal/rock hounding, and now mushroom hunting all comes from the same place and those activities have many similarities.
it can all be quite maddening, satisfying, and consuming at the same time.

I haven't seen Detectorists. I really hated that other show...can't recall the name. One of their catch-phrases was "roundness". Although it would be nice if an old horseshoe really was worth $200.
Relic: I totally agree. Whatever drives me to hunt mushrooms is temporarily appeased during the hot/dry months by hunting for old coins and arrowheads. I'm even hunting when I'm driving....and have a hell of a mis-matched collection of tools to prove it.

yeah i'm not impressed with any of those detecting shows and a lot of it is cringe-worthy...i'm sure a lot of it is staged like i hear about all 'reality' shows in the last 15 plus years. the valuations they claim are really off-putting as well.
if you (or anyone) wants to see an entertaining digger, and for the uninitiated what makes a real digger tick, take a look at youtube and more specifically aquachigger's channel; waaayyy better than any show on teevee. aquachigger's channel on youtube
he hunts in both water and on land--mostly in maryland, WV, and virginia--and does hella good for himself while being entertaining enough in his vids and explaining things in both technical and layman's terms. my collection is about a tenth of his, but i didn't get to retire at around 40 and dedicate myself to digging full time.
GL with all your hunts, mountainplayer.

Where I live, nobody gives a shit.
-------------------- γνῶθι σεαυτόν A man traveling across a field encountered a tiger. He fled, the tiger after him. Coming to a precipice, he caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung himself down over the edge. The tiger sniffed at him from above. Trembling, the man looked down to where, far below, another tiger was waiting to eat him. Only the vine sustained him.
Two mice, one white and one black, little by little started to gnaw away the vine. The man saw a luscious strawberry near him. Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted!

You grab a camera, go outside, find the mushrooms, take photos, collect. If anyone asks you tell them you like identifying random mushrooms. Also take pics of other mushrooms too so that you're not lying and hopefully learn something new!

How about pretending to walk your dog, have a doggie bag and be consistently "picking up dog shit", anyone done that?

I don't hide it. I just tell people I'm looking for mushrooms. Some people are interested in them but scared to pick any. But inform them about gourmets that could be growing on their property. Even offer to give them some I find if I have access to come and hunt on their properties. Ive had very few people turn me down.
