Reishi fruiting from corn

This Reishi is fruiting from our Corn-E-Morph MycoBag. Reishi grows very fast on corn, I tell you what.
It took about seven to ten days to colonize. This is another 15 days or so later.

It is simple to make.
Let?s make 10 bags as follows: Weigh out 10 pounds of corn and put in large pot. Put pot on outside burner. Add enough water to cover the grain by 3 inches. Heat to simmer and turn off heat. Let soak until next morning. Drain. Rinse. Drain well. Place 1 pound of corn in bag and autoclave per normal.

No wood or wood products are in a corn bag. Now our MycoKits on the other hand do use wood based Mycobags.

And I thought reishi would only grow on wood based substrates ! Thanks for sharing.

yeh, that is simple. how long to the reshi take to fruit? I would think it'd be awhile , they seem gnarly and tough in texture.

I inoculated the corn via the inoculation port with a healthy 3cc culture syringe.
Then I put it in a dark closet and checked back in a few days for the fisrt mixing of the substrate. Then I waited some more. hm hm hm ok time to look again. oh not ready to mix yet. hm hm hm ok now we can mix it one last time. Now it is all grown through and ready to fruit. Then I use a scalpel and cut a small 1" long 'x' in the plastic. the Reishi will form though this opening. or if you can provide a humid environment you can cut off the top of the bag exposing the top of the block as I did with this 4 pound block. On wood they are a little slow and even the corn is slowing down now.
I sure do enjoy Reishi.

after you cut the 1" X, no humidity is required?

opps. It still needs humidity just not as high. A tent like this one on this Shiitake MycoKit works great. Daily misting is needed. The other method requires constant 90-100% humidity.

I think that thread should go into the "Cultivation of Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" FAQ section. What do you think ?

Sorry,
I cannot see actual Reishi fruitbodies. Do you have pics with mature fruitbodies on this substrate??

Mycobag, what else fruits directly from corn, and how does this compare to your wood mycobags?

Hey, has anyone thought to try those biodegradable corn-based packing pellets? They sometimes come in shipments as an alternative to styrofoam.
