In Hindu Yoga psychology, there is a particular relationship between the first Chakra [Muladhara], which is about self-preservation of the human as a separate biological entity, and the third Chaka [Manipura - whence the Indo-European root for Manipu-lation] which is about power: physical strength, mental strength, wealth, political influence, occult powers. Between these two is the Swadhisthana Chakra, concerned with preservation of the species [and united with the Muladhara into one Root Chakra in Tibetan Buddhist Yoga], sexual bliss, and certain occult virtues. These three (or two) Earth-plane Chakras account for all ego activity pertaining to the separate, body-ego and mental-ego of the individual. Fear, Lust, Will-to-Power which includes the Adlerian Superiority Complex, greed, possessiveness, and competition belong to these psychophysical spheres of influence. Sex can be in the service of self-preservation, or it can be in the service of power - for the ego's inflation and enhancement. Or, conversely, power can be used in the service of sex, as in dominance and submission.

Power can be a pathological inflation of one's survival needs, which gets back to that relationship between the first and third Chakra psychologies. One perceives an exagerrated threat to one's well-being, and the threat must be 'overcome.' This can be in the relatively mundane world of business competition, the demonic vision of Hitler towards the Jews, or in the absurd world of team sports, where, aside from money to be made by the participants, and the demonstartion of physical prowess, the running or hitting of balls, pucks, etc. across boundary lines is utterly meaningless. Yet, such sports epitomize the motive of power behind competition. This goes beyond the need for self-preservation - beyond the competition for a mate for pleasure and survival of the species, to the extremes of meaninglessness. Witness the hysteria during Superbowl Sunday. Misdirected psychic energy that far exceeds the enthusiasm of the most emotionally-laden evangelical tent revival! Competition, for the thrill of it alone just shows how little humanity as a whole has risen from its Centauric nature. Contact sports are not removed, in principle, from gladiatorial combat. On a macro level, the stockpiling of weapons of mass destruction is just a further extreme of survival-power-paranoia-imperialism that has always and everywhere been behind war itself.

It would seem that very few humans wish to trade their Satyric and Centauric Root and Solar Plexus-centered identities for those of the Eagle, or Phoenix, Angel or Son [Daughter] of Light. There are always more warriors than philosophers, philosopher-kings are rarer still, and warrior-philosophy is not the same as a courageous philosopher (courage, from the French 'cour' or Heart - the next Chakra level of being, as Compassion is Courageous as well as spiritually Heroic).
Yes, I have to compete to survive - competition has its place. The Muladhara Chakra has its place - survival - and if one's survival is threatened, one can s**t one's pants - another related aspect of fear...but I'm not gonna make a hobby out of placing myself in such a state. I'm not interested in seeking competition any more than seeking out 'survival insticts.' I don't put myself in life-threatening situations in order to compete, like actor-martial artist S. Segal did. But then again, I'm a philosopher, not a warrior.

Look at the Soviet Union, before it crashed. There was no competitive behavior because everyone was supposed to be equal. Lack of competition led to unmotivated workers, which led to substandard productivity, and ultimately led to the collapse of the economic structure.

Nah, Russia went from a completely devastated feudal society that had just been destroyed by the germans to being able to fight off the most powerful armed force ever assembled in human history within 23 years. Whatever was the problem, it sure as hell wasn't motivation.

The collapse probably had more to do with the devastation of taking the brunt of the second world war (80% of all german casualties were caused by russians) and always being massively poorer than the USA anyway. Then again, if you compared the state of the economy in Russia 70 years after it's inception and the economy of the USA 70 years after it's inception I don't think it would come out too poorly.

Difficult to see what "competition" exists in the US really. I know the idea is to make the poor compete with each other, but I don't see massive corporations like Walmart doing too much to foster competition with anyone - on the contrary they try their damndest to stifle it and create monopolies.

Keep dreaming, the Soviet Union is NOT the only place in the world where communist economic fantasies have been a failure. Every place the communist economic model has been tried it has met with failure to live up to it's unfounded expectations. Let's compare Hong Kong with pre-economic reform communist China, or how about East vs. West Germany.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

That is where Walmart is competing, is by underpricing the others. To compete, for example, there are huge grocery store chains experiencing a strike because they had asked their employees to pay $5 per week toward full health care benefits. The stores have to cut costs somewhere to be able to compete with Walmart.
