Any reasonable BRF substitutes?
    #2286677 - 01/30/04 11:30 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hi guys ... I haven't found anything here that resembles Brown Rice Flour even closely so I'm looking for any substitutes that won't mean much of a loss of yield. Would making PF jars with verm+coco coir be a good idea or is that really just meant for casing?

That is meant for casing. Get some Wild bird seed (Finch) works great and colonizes fast. You can use it whole by it self or grind it for your pf jars

You can create your own flour starting from the simple brown
rice.
Never tried coco coir as a substitute, only have been readin
that is not like BRF (colonization slower).
You are not able to find where you livin' the BRF?

I remember reading in the past that all attempts at the PF tek using coir have resulted in bacterial infections.

Personally, I haven't tried it. But it seems like a reasonable outcome using that material.

You can put some whole brown rice in a blender or coffee grinder and make your own flower.

Use long grain, organic brown rice and blend it up (leaving it a little chunky to help with aeration)

Works wonders

Wild Bird Seed, Millet, Whole Oats, and a whole slew of other ingredients would probably substitute.  I've seen a few logs utilizing each of the forementioned: one of the more memorable ones was an Oat-cake PF style of Puerto Ricans that looked as though it was going to explode!  I'll try to find that log...

Have fun in the mean time

Check out the hominy thread in the advanced forum. Afoaf started those a week ago, and is getting good results.

If your using a blender. Put about a 1/2 cup of rice and blend the shit out of it. Put the flower in bowl and do another batch. It may take several batches to get as much flower as you need.

A coffee grinder works the same way. Its just a little bettter IMO.

A FOAF likes to use 2 parts verm, 1 part water, and 1/2 part BRF, and 1/2 part Millet flour. this seems to work really well, fast colonization and it seems to be more potent. Blending the long grain organic brown rice work very well and is preffered over store bought BRF. you can find alot of these i guess revised teks in the FAQ, look them over and experiment, then once you find what you like, stick with it, but until you do i would go with the good and proven pf tek. good luck and keep us updated!

Coir has very little nutritional value.

Think of this way, you are replacing high carbohydrate, high fibre food for something that is pretty much zero food value.

AFOAF did some comparison studies . He found that whole wheat flour had to much gluten so stuck together like glue . He found that rye flour held about the same consistancy as rice flour but a person needs to satureate the vermiculite first before adding the flour . He thinks that the rye flour will do just wonderful and is a hell of a lot cheaper .

use millet - because it kicks arse over every other substrate - just like ive always said... mix it with your verm as if it was flour whole - not husked. add some flour (corn.br.wheat) to the mix to speed things up.

You would need a pc for that, right?

if you need to PC it, why just not do whole millet?? i thought the whole grand deal about PF cakes is that you could get away without PC'ing them.
